Constipation from meds

Posted by mshrink66 @mshrink66, Jan 9 8:23am

I have chronic nerve pain from a couple of failed back surgeries. I have been on Lyrica, Cymbalta and most recently Effexor. It seems that when I get to a therapeutic dose, I get severe constipation. I have tried Metamucil with Colace, and Miralax without success. Seems the only thing that works is s stimulating laxative which I know isn’t good to use long term. Since this is such a common side effect of these meds, has anyone had any success getting around this? These meds really help me so I hate to give up on them. Thank you for any advice!

I have the same issues due to meds following double back surgery. But I learned a trick from my mom's geriatric doctor years ago that is part of my success. I start my day drinking hot coffee ( mixed with cocoa to reduce the acidity) I usually keep going with that until I can have a bm. In addition I take Ducolax at night and a usually 3 of a regular laxative “Senna” 1st thing in the morning. I eat very little until I’ve had a bm , sometimes this takes a few hours…but it works every day! Hope that helps -

Combo of Miralax in the morning coffee and Phillips MOM once a week works well and no need for the fancy drugs

I am on Linzess (worked really well at first, but not as much anymore), and I take ducolase and a supplement called cleanse more by Renewlife. I all helps but when I go a few days without a bm and I use a enema, I know it's not comfortable but gives instant relief.

I suffered from constipation for years. And now ive been on opioids for quite a few years and have
Tried Everything. I finally found something that help/ works!
I take 1
Teaspoon of Calms at night
Before bed.
It also has other pleasant qualities. I have to be careful not to take too much as it can cause me to be too loose;
But after years of struggle this has worked for over a year!

I eat prunes (4-6) before my lunch and for years that has kept me going well.

I’ve tried before, but it didn’t help me. I might would need about 50 prunes. Lol

I just did an inventory of all my meds and supplements and am trying to figure out what is making my intestines slow to a crawl. I chew fiber gummies at night and eat two salads a day and yet.. recent cadence is twice a week if I’m lucky. On Wednesday I got up in the middle of the night - not an ordinary event - and had sweats and nausea and a lot of pain - I wasn’t sure if I was going to throw up, pass out, have a seizure, or what. I finally had ‘success’ and had to change PJ’s because I was sweat-soaked. That felt like a vasovagal episode.

I really want to avoid an actual laxative but I will have to soon.

I had all of this under control- and now I don’t. 🙁

As long as I drink my Metamucil and Miralax, eat lots of veggies and whole grains, drink lots of water, exercise…..I will go okay…sort of odd texture. Jello. Lol

I may just have IBS constipation. I see a visit in my chart to my primary from 2014 where I had chronic diarrhea! Hard to imagine. My mom has the same thing.

I suspect that my constipation could be due to anxiety. Lots on my plate when it started. (Long story.). That’s one reason I’m in therapy and contemplating meds, which I already have a prescription for.

I can relate to the scenario you describe. At times, I’ve envisioned that I could actually die on the toilet. It’s not fun. My brother actually went to the ER once for constipation! He’s never said what they did for him,

This time llast year I had just been diagnosed with microscopic colitis after 7 months of don’t-leave-the-house kind of diarrhea, complete with C-Diff. It was awesome to take a steroid treatment that absolutely cured me by end of January. Life was great for four short months.
Then I had lung surgery to remove a tumor and they got me so constipated with narcotics after surgery nothing has been quite right since from a GI stance.
I love my GI doc - A PA actually but incredibly good. So we will work this out I’m sure.

I sure hope it works out. It’s such a pain to deal with. Keeping the faith….
