Repeat lumpectomy? And treatment decisions. Need advice
Just had lumpectomy Dec 1. Pathology report was: positive margin on the posterior edge DCIS Micropapillary Grade 2. My surgeon called me yesterday for re-excision or another lumpectomy. I was hesitant to do it since I am a single mom and I was so difficult for me and my teens . Today he said he present my case to the tumor board to help me decide. Any suggestions? Did my surgeon messed up and missed the rest of the cancer cells? Or he just didn’t see the cancer with his naked eye just what he told me? What is the percentage that second surgery will be successful. ? After this , my oncologist said I will have radiation and hormone therapy for 5 years since my ER is positive. I need help in decision making please.

Wishing you a complete and speedy recovery with hope and love!
Dear lifetraveler,
I am feeling better everyday with God’s grace. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers. Had my f/u appt and my surgeon said everything is good and my latest pathology result is negative now for margins. I praise God for that. And I really appreciate your thoughtfulness. Be Bless.
I had similar experience with second lumpectomy. Had low grade infection--took antibiotic and that cleared. No radiation. Anastrazole for 3 years---lost calcium in bones, other side effects. Discontinued anastrazole at oncologist's urging. No further meds. Now 4 years post first lumpectomy. As these posts often say, we each have individual responses. No 2 of us are alike!
So glad you are feeling better. Prayers for you and family.
Thanks for sharing such a wonderful news, Kikay! It brightens my day:)
Enjoy your teens, please rest well & take good care of yourself, for tomorrow shall be a better day!
I was thinking I responded to you- but not sure, I’m 60, lumpectomy (4-4-23)on left breast and 3 lymph nodes(no cancer) and reconstruction in both, margin clear but not large enough. Lumpectomy (4-21-23) and margins large enough. Second surgery took more healing time. Radiation 15 days. Moisturizer and Do your stretches! Took me about 30 days to heal. First AI drug anastrozole… many side effects. Also got lymphedema- caught early, had a month therapy and am good doing care at home. Took a month off started exestamine (sp)another AI- a few achy joints and hard to fall asleep- adjusted when I took medicine and it has helped with sleep. Keep stretching and exercising- it has helped me to move. Eating better has too.
Give your body time to heal!! God is with you!
Thank you for the input. I asked for the antibiotics when I had the fever but surgeon said I didn’t need it. I will meet my oncologist in Feb. I wonder if I still need the radiation ( as first planned) . I don’t really like to do it but if needed I guess I have to. Just want the hormone therapy.
