Lower back pain/pelvic tilt /mattress suggestions

Posted by soph77 @soph77, Dec 11, 2023

Hi everyone,
I have posted before for pelvic tilt issues and am now having issues with my lower back. I am not sure if they are related.
I have been seeing a physiotherapist for pelvic tilt for a few months now, and I sometimes do feel better after I do my exercises but I feel like whenever I do something out of the noraml day to day stuff, the pain worsens. For example, I went to a party and wore heels (not stilettos, they are actually a comfortable pair). It was standing only, so by the end of the evening I was in a lot of pain - leg, back, and shoulders. I felt ok after a few days of physio.
We also recently got a new mattress and I feel like it is contributing to my back pain, since I didn't really have much lower back pain before. It is a tempurpedic, memory foam, firm mattress. We thought this would be better for our backs (my husband sometimes has issues as well). Although they say it takes of couple of weeks to breal in the mattress, I wake up stiff every morning and I am convinced it is because of the mattress. We have 100 days to return it and we have pretty much decided to return/exchange it. I understand if recommendations for brands are not permitted, but any suggestions for a type of mattress that is good for back pain would be appreciated (e.g. we are now considering spring coil, medium firmness).
Also, in addition to physiotherapy, I am considering asking my doctor for a recommendation to a specialist for my pelvic tilt/back issues, but I am not sure what type of doctor specializes in these issues? Would it be an orthopedist? Some other specialty? I think my physiotherapist is good and has helped me but I feel like I am not improving as much as I should be at this point.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

You need to try different mattresses before you buy one. What is comfortable for one is not comfortable to another.
It can be a problem.

I have had lower back pain for more than 30 years. The best mattress that I would recommend is a Beauty Rest and make sure that is is the firmest one that you can get. I have used and replaced this same mattress for years and it has been so supportive to my back. I can tell that I may need to replace the one I have in a year or two. I think that they are top of the line, but I would never buy any other brand than Beauty Rest (firm!). Hope that this helps.

My beauty rest firm broke down within 2 years. I would never buy another one. What is good for one is awful to another. A person needs go to a reputable store and test the mattress.

I’ve been researching and am thinking the sleep number may be my next mattress. Good to hear your review.

You might consider an adjustable frame for your mattress. Placing something to slightly elevate your knees while on your back or between your knees are while on your side can also be useful. Both these adjustments can put less strain on your back.

I agree with another post that a remote control adjustable bed frame is a good thing to have. I use mine to adjust the lower and upper half of my body to ease my back pain. It also improves snoring, if you have a spouse who snores😁. Having a firm mattress is a benefit as well. Although, I had to purchase a mattress pad to softening up a bit. I hope you can find some relief.

I too am struggling with sleep apnea. Please tell me about what an adjustable mattress frame is.

The frame facilitates raising and lowering the head and -or foot of the mattress. Raising the head of the mattress helps to avoid soft tissue in your throat from collapsing over the airway - the Definition of obstructive apnea. The frame comes With a remote control. Very nice.

They will tell you that regular Mattresses with rigid Or mostly rigid edges may not Flex well enough to really lend themselves to bending over Time. I say balderdash. I have a middle range regular mattress for four years on my frame and it’s fine. It was a little bit of a ski slope to begin with but I raised the feet to prevent sliding off and over a week or so the edges relaxed.
Or you can get an expensive made for Motion mattress 🙂 When I think I have gotten the goodie out of this one, I will buy the motion-ready mattress next time.

I would never get another tempurpedic. It was one of the earlier ones but at that time it cost a lot of money. It advertises that the mattress conforms to you but it seemed to me that I conformed it. I always felt like I was sleeping in a hole.

@pb50 I was diagnosed with mild sleep apnea three years ago. I wear my CPAP every night. I get a much deeper and sound sleep since using my CPAP. Are you being treated for SA and using a machine?
