I have the same problem and have a guard. The best way to clean it is with luke warm to warm water and a drop of Dawn or the equivalent and let it air dry. I haven't had a problem with this cleaning method.

I was told by my dentist to use toothpaste to clean it, but I didn't feel that would sanitize it enough. Thank you for the suggestion, which I will now try.
