Herbals for SIBO

Posted by johnbluffside @johnbluffside, Nov 17, 2022

Dx with SIBO thru hospital controlled test. However no diarhea or constipation. Brain fog, abdominal pain, fatique and joint pain, stiffness/ pain neck & back. Ongoing 3 years every test imaginable only test that was positive was a blood test and showed high inflammatory markers. Tried Lowfodmap diet with a dietician . Tried hypnotherapy in person and tapes. Tried 6 different anyidepresssnts horrible side effects.
Accupunture & massages.

Tried xifian numerous times. Always comes back. Wondering safety of using herbals? GI doesn’t believe in them .
Apple cider vinegar
Candibactin AR & BR
Allicon
Beeberine
Biofilm/ biofilm disruptor
Dysbiocide / Biotics Research
Anyone have similar experience?
Thank you!

I truly believe there is someone that can help you. Something is being missed to test for. I know it’s not easy. But don’t give up. You deserve to feel good.
Have you been tested for mold toxicity, parasites, yeast infections or fungal infections? If not, find a doctor that will test you for these. All of these can affect our gut and digestion.
If I didn’t mention this book, it’s worth the read - “Super Gut” by Dr. William Davis, available on amazon.

No, there's no where within 100 miles of here (or even farther) who could test for the mold and others you mentioned. And even if I could travel far to find such a doctor--I can't--I doubt they'd be taking new patients, most of the doctors in this state are not taking new patients. Or else you have to wait so long for an appointment, I could be dead by then--I'm old. I will check out Super Gut as you suggest. I've also found that when I tell medical professionals that my mother and her mother all suffered with the same exact symptoms, I get, "Ah, it's hereditary then. Afraid I can't help much then." After almost 3/4 of a century dealing with this with no help, I just can't see any solution suddenly appearing on the horizon.

I had two severe kidney infections last September and December. The first time, I was on a 10 day RX of CIPRO. IN December, I was hospitalized and was on an IV of CIPRO for 5 days and then 10 days of CIPRO pills at home. My kidney infections were healed and so was my SIBO. It’s one year later and I am still SIBO free. Thank God. Hope this helps someone else.

I had SIBO few years ago, diagnose via endoscopy fluid sample. I was treated with three different antibodies over long period. Take one antibody for week, 3 weeks off, take another for week, then 3 weeks off, etc... Took long time to treat, but worked.

The herbals noted are fine and safe, and can be effective or not.
ACV "may "add to gerd issues, fermentation issues. SIBO does not directly cause some of the issues noted,
but if epithelial is damaged, and toxins are leaking into blood then sure, histamine, joints, brain. If drugs helped or cured temporarily, it would indicate dysbiosis; H2, H2s or CH4. Maybe sulfur component or primary. Maybe fungas (sifo).

Tthe challenges involved in treating with drugs or herbals involve far more nuance than most patients can absorb and more than "most" GIs can deal with. Your physicians response indicates that she/he is not
qualified to address herbal efficacy. Why would you expect an MD to respond favorably to alternative remedies?

If symptoms returned, did your MD test again? If not, how does she/he know if progress was made or not? Sibo may have retured but if levels were reduced, it may suggesst another round immediately or another longer round or another round but with Metronizadole. etc. Mulitple rounds of drugs or herbal remedies may be required,
alternated and/or coupled with a prokinetic. Did you take a prokinetic, after, before or with? If not, your doc is way, way off the beaten path. You may benefit from a 100-200 hours of online research. Google, Dr. Pimental, Dr Siebecker and siboinfo.

Consider giving herbals a whirl, but get an ND/DC who has taken mastery coursework. SIBO/ IMO are not taught in school, right? It is not possible for an ND/ DC or MD to reach first base without a minium of 50 hours of training. My background includes 50 hrs into formal, online training and a thousand additional hours over ten years and am not an expert.

I have had chronic SIBO for years, treated multiple times always comes back. Considering seeing someone in Pimentel’s group. Question: Isn’t Xifaxin more successful than Flagyl (metronidazole) in treating SIBO?
Can you list prokinetics that are best for SIBO issues?

Thanks,
Susan

Hi rmv65, After 3 endoscopies and prescriptions drugs, I had had enough, especially when the GI after my last endoscopy told me to never take a PPI again as the cells in my intestines were hypertrophic. So...I knew I needed to make a change. After following a young man with a 10 year journey and no one able to find what was causing his symptoms he switched to functional medicine. So I had nothing to lose and I switched to a functional medicine doctor who tested me thoroughly for causes, looked at all my vitamin and mineral levels, thyroid function, etc. In addition to SIBO, I had SIFO, an overgrowth of clostridia which is a bacteria, mold exposure, low in B2, low in zinc. I was put on a prebiotic and probiotic to build up the good bacteria in the gut (all antibiotics kill the bad but the good too), a number of natural remedies that require the doctor's recommendation from specific companies, worked with her nutritionist to eliminate what I shouldn't be eating and include some things I should - Kefir and other fermented foods (pickles, sauerkraut, kombucha, yogurts that contain active cultures - I eat only sheep's milk for easier digestion). As well buy only organic fruits and vegetables as much as you can afford. Low Fodmap is too one size fits all - so I ate the foods that agreed with me even if they were on the list as the nutritionist suggested. My functional medicine doctor is in California and only treats patients in the state. But you can seek one out at ifm.org by city and state. Each has a bio and their specialties.
My doctor also recommended infrared sauna and epsom salt baths that help eliminate toxins.
Best to you. I know it's not an easy path.

Maybe get your sodium levels checked if you are using epsom salt.

Epsom salt is not actually a salt. It is magnesium sulfate. No need to test sodium levels that I’ve read or been told by my doctor.

Hello Everyone, I'm new to this group, read your posts (typed in SIBO, read those too). Thank you all for sharing! Numerous scans, labs, OP procedures, extensive reading, podcasts, hours of research—it's confusing, contradictory, depressing and scary. Me: I've been living this nightmare without a diagnosis until 2 weeks ago, while thinking I was a crazy hypochondriac, as everything came back 'normal'. What's normal about this?! Difficult to nail down and seems even more difficult to treat. I understand about finding the CAUSE—has anyone gotten an answer to that? Right now just staring at the antibiotics I picked up today plus 5 variations of Fodmap diets. Better do something or the next time on my scale I'll be 8 oz!

The last time I talked to a medical professional about the cause for SIBO, she told me that no one knows for sure, that it *might* be caused by injury to the abdomen or intestinal area.

I have a weak muscle in my throat which also causes me to aspirate at times. The only thing that helps me is Aselastin nasal spray 2 sprays each nostril twice a day
