Failed prep for colonoscopy: What can I do?
I recently failed two preps for a colonoscopy, and I can't imagine putting myself through another attempted prep (stuff makes me hurl). Initially, prior to my 2nd failure to prepare, the PA put me on Raniditone - which is apparently just Zanactz - but now my heart burn is out of control!<br /> I wake every morning with a sinus-load of stomach acid. I already was taking emepresole (sp?) in the morning. This double-dose of anti-acids seems to be on its way to doing me in. BUT, if I don't take the Randitone - I get the original issue back, which is a horrible pinching pain in my side and massive diarrhea all day. I am at a loss.

Was this prep prescribed by a Mayo DR? My husband has a struggle with getting an acceptable prep. What they had him do was tortuous but successful.
1 week of soft diet then
1 gallon of liquid prep
3 days clear liquid
1/2 gallon of prep the eve before
He’s a big guy and was very weak going into the prep.
No alternatives given for him
at Mayo.

2 ReactionsCatherine, did they tell also that they had trouble finding a surgeon to operate on a Crohn's patient 'cause our guts were "fussy"?! As if to make a point, my gut decided to stop all parastalsis after my operation. Who knew it could even do that. BTW: The cure and preventative for that is to chew gum and walk at the same time. Sounds like the punch line of a bad joke.

3 ReactionsMy fistula connected the ileum of the small intestine to the vagina. I was diagnosed with Crohn's at that time. Do to the fact that there were numerous ulcers from Crohn's, they performed an ileostomy to allow healing by use of a biologic(Stelara). 2 &a half years later I had a reversal.

1 ReactionDepending on where you live some surgeons are more specialized than others. Whoever you see should write a referral for a competant doctor so you get the care you need.
Daaaamn. I’d never comply with that. I souped for three days before prep started. But that wasn’t clear liquids all 3 days. I hated every minute of prep and threw up twice.
Fortunately I had no polyps this time and it had been four yrs since prior one. I’m 73 and we agreed that barring issues, I’m done with screening colonoscopies.
Oh how I wish I could be done too! I am 75 but have Crohn's so have to get colonoscopy every year in order to keep getting my medicine ordered.
Well the reason for the last one was to diagnose 7 months of diarrhea - I had no polyps but they did random biopsies of my colon to diagnose microscopic colitis. And told me that at 73 with a clear result, I don’t to have any more for screening.

So happy you are done with all that. I wonder if there is an age limit for colonoscopy. There are no PAP tests after 65 and no Dexa scans after 76.
The recommended age range is mow 46-75. The guidance does specify that screening after 75 is determined on an individual basis with a patient and his/her physician.
