GERD: What helps long term?
Does anyone know what I can take for GERD long term? I never had it until they removed my gallbladder. Since then I have been living in hell. I cannot take pain medication, antidepressants, of course certain foods. I have tried prilosec, nexium, and now take tums and zantac. I have severe GERD where I feel i am having a heart attack. I think it was in October of last year I was taken to the hospital with it because it seem much worse than before. At that time they ran every test for heart problems and thank God I do not have heart disease. I Cannot bend over to work in my yard like I love too mostly because of that. Also wanted to ask if anyone heard that Tums would give you Alzheimers? I will have to take 3 or more sometimes to get the pain to stop. That is the only thing I found that works with the Zantac but I am worried about the Alzheimers since my grandfather had it. I also need to get my teeth pulled but am scared to death of the pain since I cannot take pain killers.

@mikaylar I agree - if even one person has a certain reaction they have to list it, to cover all bases.
Everyone’s body reacts differently to different things, whether food or medication, so what’s good for one may not be good for another, and vice versa. I have been on medications that have worked wonders for others but did nothing for me, and I have taken some that I was warned about certain reactions by the doctor prescribing it but I haven’t experienced any. It’s all trial and error, I guess. 🤷🏼♀️
@kbro what are the symptoms of silent reflux? I mean, if you don’t actually experience heartburn - which is the main reason you would go to see a doctor (I.e., you have to feel some sort of pain or discomfort to investigate a problem), what sign/symptom do you go by? I have been diagnosed with a couple of silent problems (not gastric - that definitely was not “silent” in my case, lol) by an unrelated test or procedure. Was that the case with you?

Check the ph level of the water you drink. I find that drinking water that has a ph level above 7 soothes my throat and helps prevent GERD. I drink water regularly throughout the day. I also use a special pillow that raises my head several inches, and I do not eat anything after dinner at night. Dairy, alcohol, tomatoes, carbonated beverages, and caffeine appear to aggravate my condition. I know these may sound like simple things, but for me they help.
H. What is reflux gourmet? Thanks
Protonix 40 mg works for me & I also drink Alkaline water. Water with a little lemon helps as does probiotics and kefir. Eat 5 small meals and chew slowly. Elevate your bed or mattress by at least 6 inches. Anxiety and stress can also cause Globes sensation. I also take amitriptyline for presbyesophagus. There's a new medication that was recently approved but has been used in other countries called vonoprazan.
I started to have the Globus sensation in my throat by my collar bone. Then about 5 months later bad congestion, sinus pressure, nasal cycling, ears feel full, clogged, ringing and I have lightheadedness. I took myself to the ER because I was having a hard time breathing. The ER doctor diagnosed me with reflux and put me on meds. I also had a CT scan of my throat. He told me to see an ENT for my congestion. They said I had allergies and put me on Flonase. That did nothing. Then saw a GI doctor and had a EGD w/dilation. That did not help. I was told I have esophagitis with mucosal breaks. I have also had an esophagram. This showed I refluxed 4 times in a 2 min period. I didn’t fell it at all. And this was while I’d been taking 40 mg of pantoprazole twice a day for a month and a half. So that wasn’t helping either. I am going next Friday to have the EGD w/Bravo done by a different GI doctor.
Where would I get the acid block?
@kbro2010 wow! I hope the new procedure will provide some resolution! I am thankful I have not experienced globus!
My doctor ordered it but I would check online see if you can order it, it's not a prescription.
