Cirrhosis is not a disease. It is scar tissue in the liver resulting from disease or alcohol abuse. It sounds like you do have some scarring. If the doctor thinks you don’t have portal hypertension, what does she say is causing the ascites? I strongly recommend you see a GI doctor ASAP. He/she should do an upper GI to make sure you don’t also have esophageal varices (varicose veins in the esophagus) which are very dangerous if left untreated. Is there a transplant hospital near you? If so you can ask for an evaluation and you will likely get more comprehensive care than anywhere else you can go.

I get an EDG every 3 years. I get it with my colonoscopy. When I was DX with cirrhosis of the liver I was already taking carvedolol for high BP and this particular drug is good to take to not get varices my hep MD told me. I also get MRI or ultrasound every 6 months to check liver and make sure I do not get liver cancer. 3 years later still good.
