Not diagnosed with cancer, but MRI f/u results. Suggestions??

Posted by ldrutter @ldrutter, Dec 27, 2023

I have went for my 2nd 6 month MRI f/u. For some reason, I’m not convinced. I have been having aching, itching, pain, and a wet sensation in my left breast, where the “mass” is. I don’t have any drainage, no inverted nipple, no color change, or rash. I just feel like something is “off”. The mass was biopsied 6 months ago and was benign. The problem is these new symptoms started about a month ago. I go see my breast doctor this Friday to go over the MRI results. My question is, has any one had a mass removed even though it was benign? I will add my MRI results for those that want to read it.

@ldrutter , reading your reply, are you saying that ‘it’ meaning a lumpectomy hasn’t been mentioned since the biopsy showed it was benign?
My point was that if there is a mass in your breast, even of the biopsy shows it is benign - the mass should not be there, & should be removed. If removed when benign, it will not ‘possibly’ turn into cancer. That was my point.
Obviously, you are having these these feelings in your words “have been having aching, itching, pain, and a wet sensation in my left breast,” , it is not normal & the mass should be removed. Good luck.

That is correct. A lumpectomy has not been mentioned. I’m definitely going to bring this up in the morning. I may even get a second opinion. I will keep you all updated!

Did you have the first MRI before your biopsy? Were the first few sentences of the report under LEFT: the same in your first MRI? Perhaps your doctor can shed some light for you on what led the radiologist to rate it as BIRADS-3 and not 2 or 4, and the potential cause of the rapid washout kinetics. Did the doctor provide you with an explanation that you are comfortable with regarding the "focal mild usual hyperplasia with perivascular chronic inflammation” and “fibrous parenchyma does contain some areas of chronic inflammation surrounding small blood vessels focally and there are some dilated venous structures present within the adipose tissue"? For instance, did your doctor provide info on the significance of that description and can it also be seen in malignancies? It might be worth googling those terms for more information in addition to asking your breast doctor. Glad you are in tune with your symptoms and advocating for yourself.

My first MRI from 6 months ago had the same description, but was given a BI-RADS 4. The “mass” has went down 2 mm, so I’m assuming that’s why the BIRADS went from a 4 to a 3? I have read and concerned that the mass could potentially turn malignant. I don’t like the idea of “watching and waiting”.

You're wise to dig deeper about the change in BIRADS but also about the "chronic inflammation surrounding blood vessels" and "dilated venous structures within adipose tissue". There are easily understandable research papers on the web regarding those descriptors of breast tissue. One thing I've learned after 17 years of treatment is not to assume but to ask about everything. We are better self-advocates when we are fully informed to our satisfaction. Keeping you in my thoughts for a helpful appointment tomorrow. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

@ldrutter I was referring to having the cyst aspirated/drained, not removing it. I don't think any doctor would do a mastectomy for a cyst and your dysplasia is normal. But if it is a cyst and uncomfortable, they should be able to stick a needle in and drain the fluid out, I would think. My mother had something like that done. Is it possible the cyst is causing inflammation? An infection? Things to ask the doc!

A mass is not a cyst.

Right @blackcat. The report mentions cysts as well as a mass. Sorry as the thread continued I conflated them (like playing telephone).

I had a lot of discomfort from cysts and still wonder if those could be drained but the main issue, yes, is the mass and the inflammation.

Yes, they can be drained by suction with a needle. Google "breast cyst aspiration."
