Diagnosed IDC with metastasis to lymph node: Who to see first?
I was newly diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma of left breast with metastasis in the lymph node. I want to know who did u see first, the oncologist or the surgeon? I do have an appointment with the oncologist on this Tuesday.

I saw the surgeon first but in your case, with a positive lymph node, you might benefit from seeing the oncologist first, as you are doing. Let us know how you are doing!

I was first seen in a Breast Clinic by an oncologist who coordinated all the appointments for testing and appts with other specialist; surgeon, genetic testing, bone density, etc…
The surgery is only part of the treatment plan, the oncologist usually supervises all parts of treatment plan (chemo, radiation, meds, post treatment supervision, etc…)
It will vary depending on clinic you go to.

I had idc with 2 lymph positive. They check my lymphs while in surgery 4 for them were hot so they took 4 out. However only 2 had cancer. 1 was microscopic not really enough but had to say 2. Surgery went well all clear margins. Went with lump and reconstruction right after so the girls would be same. Did radiation for 6 weeks whole breast and now taking anastrozole for the next 5-7 years. Not too bad side effects. Mood swings are parent. Menopause all over again. But if this will keep my cancer at bay why not. What to see grandchild !!!
Thank u!
I met with the surgeon at my cancer hospital as i had the biopsy already. She connected me with the medical oncologist.
Keep us posted. Sending prayers your way and positive vibes.
@mskim64, how are you doing? Any more questions for members as you prepare for your first appointment with the oncologist next week?
Hello and sorry for the late response, it's been a difficult journey since then. Once I went for the appt. it really wasn't a visit because I didn't get to see her because my so called insurance I have currently til Dec 31st wasn't accepted. The office was suppose to verify the insurance before I came, but didn't so it was a wasted trip. However, after it was verified my insurance wasn't accepted. I asked the receptionist...could I do a self pay because my PCP don't want me to wait until the 1st for my new insurance to start. The receptionist told me it would have to be approved by the doctor? I was in disbelief that you have to be approve for a self pay? Why? I 've been going round and round for over a week now in trying to get a response back from the oncologist's doctor and their office. I'm so frustrated now because now it's the holidays and no one will be back in the office until it's over. My new insurance kicks in on the 1st and it couldn't get here fast enough. On the 1st I'll be asking my PCP for new referral for a new oncologist. Sorry to vent, but this is really frustating.!
