That can be a reason for pain in an ankle (in the absence of ankle injury). The doctor first needs to track down the source of your pain. This is often the job of a neurologist who does some tests and imaging to determine where the pain is being generated. Sometimes, neuropathy is just caused by nerves wearing out. This is what a doctor needs to determine to know what is right for the patient.
