Was well for years and now my IBS is back?

Posted by pacodennis @pacodennis, Dec 1, 2023

I went for about 3 years and felt good. About a month ago. I started having excess gas, that turned into cramps, that turned into diarrhea within about 2 weeks. Now I have about a 2 day cycle. After I have a BM, I have IBS feeling for at least 18-24 hours. I start feeling OK for a day or so until I have another BM which starts the horrible feelings all day and night.
I was treated for Depression /Anxiety with an anti-depressant and benzos, but tapered down significantly. I am a 71 year old male. I also have Idiopathic Peripheral Neuropathy that does affect my abdomen area. So my situation is quite complicated.
I am wondering if anyone has had their IBS go away for years and then return?

Fortunately or unfortunately IBS can go into remission. When it comes back it is disheartening. I suggest starting Align and a teaspoon of Metamucil everyday. When mine came back it really helped. There are days when nothing helps and I take one immodium and it really works to cut the symptoms. I hope this helps.

Anxiety really amps up my IBS. If you are still anxious (and IBS can make you that way too), consider cognitive behavior therapy (CBT). I did a hypnosis version (just sit, listen and relax) for seven weeks with a practitioner. I learne how to do it (the goal) and can now do it on my own or listen to her tapes if I get out of the groove. Sure wish the food side of my IBS would go into remission!

So sorry 😢 it came back.
I have like 7 diagnoses over 10 years.
6 th Gastro Dr now .
For the IBS - D my Gastro suggested Metamucil too and IB- Guard .
I started both but I was having pelvic pains not just horrendous gas and 1000 deep wet belching . So I stopped the IB - Guard .
It does help some people though .
I’m on antidepressant too again at night . I’ve tried others but bad side effects. This one isn’t helping my digestive disorders but helps mood . God Bless you .

I’ve found working with a functional md has helped after I went through an eye issue, then cdiff from tons of antibiotics. My gut was trashed from steroids and antibiotics. They just see things from a very broad perspective. The gut is so very connected to the brain. I have found things like daily exercise, organic ground flax seed and a product line called megaspore probiotics has helped my gut issues as well as no dairy and limited sugar. Best wishes to you.

Thank you all for the great replies. They really have helped me have some perspective. I had a colonoscopy today. Nothing serious. Good. I hope. I will keep you informed...plus I am adding certain things you all have used to help you, thanks for sharing.
