I would say that you are experiencing nerve pain. Those lightning types sensations you describe are similar to what I had. The only relief I got was by taking a medication called Lyrica. Is specific for nerve pain. Unfortunately, regardless how skilled the surgeon might be some of us have more damaged, nerved than others, and end up having to deal with this type of pain.
Be patient. It will get better. Recovery takes about a year. (Which is much longer than I ever expected)

I've had both knees replaced with success. I feel terrible for those of you who have posted here and are in so much pain/discomfort.

I am familiar with Lyrica and I do believe it works well for nerve pain. As for numbness, as one writer noted, surgeons have a hard time avoiding this due to the extent of the surgery and that nerves are all over the place. I had numbness on the skin over both knees and inside the knees. It lasted for about six months and has mostly resolved.

I hope you all find relief and I'm sorry I don't have more to offer. As for exercise causing pain, that should be stopped. Therapy after surgery causes a lot of discomfort but not sharp pain. that should be looked into. My only other suggestion is to ice the affected areas as much as possible and use OTC pain relievers like Tylenol. Above all stay as active as possible, given the pain, to avoid the development of scar tissue.

I wish the best to all of you, and again, I'm terribly sorry for what you're going through. It's hard to have patience, but sometimes a lot of these things resolve within a year, or at least get better. It's a common but very invasive surgery. You are all very courageous.
