Welcome to the Mayo Connect, Chronic Pain thread. I'm a Volunteer Mentor and am not a medical professional. I can offer my experience and support, but no medical diagnosis or medical advice. Others in the Mayo Connect community offer their support and suggestions for alternatives they have tried in similar situations to yours.

From what you have shared, you have been through so many surgeries and so much pain that my heart goes out to you. I have had a few surgeries and procedures, and pain, but not at the level you have experienced. As an RN, it must be very difficult for you to step back and have others determine what level of pain management you need. With the new emphasis on getting people off opioids, those whose bodies require strong pain control are being left in the cold. I'm sorry you're caught in this cycle.

Others on this thread who may be able to give you support and ideas are @parus @grandmar @gman007 @hopeful33250 @windwalker @contentandwell. I see that @lioness has already responded to you. I know that having a place to talk about our problems is very important to our mental health when we're in pain. Hopefully you will also find some alternative ways to help with your pain.

Warm regards,
Gail
Volunteer Mentor

@gailb @freezing I was mentioned as someone who might be able to help/support but honestly this is beyond me. I have had some surgeries of course, the biggie being the liver transplant, but I have not a persistent pain problem.
I wish you success in getting help for your needs. I am glad you found a doctor more understanding than your prior doctor. Of course opioids were getting over-prescribed but that does not mean that some people really do need them to be able to live a full life. It's really terrible that because of the problems, people like yourself are denied what you do need.
