Phage therapy is not an approved treatment in the US at this time, although there have been exceptions made with formal appeal to the FDA. Having said that, I am aware of a couple of cases treated at University of CA/San Diego for abscessus. As I understand, no phages have been found yet for any other NTM although phage libraries are constantly growing. I hope to get treatment one day for my MAC!
I have many links to send but they were blocked by this site. once I am no longer considered a new member, I will try again to put them on here.
In the meantime....
A fantastic book about a real-life phage search and eventual cure is The Perfect Predator by Steffanie Strathdee.
Let's all talk to our doctors and friends about phages to encourage more support for research!

Welcome to Mayo Connect. I can hardly wait to see the links when you are able to post them! Do you like to do research? I am always looking for others who are "research nerds" like me who can bring us the latest and best information on current studies and tests - both in the US and abroad.

They should long have approved phage therapy in the US. History demonstrates phage therapy started in 1931 in the US but then came antibiotics later and they stopped with the phages because antibiotics came on the scene and became a better money maker for pharma. Another excuse was phages could be used for biological war fare. I studied microbiology in college and learned the extensive benefits of phase therapy. I questioned why that type of treatment was not pursued but I never got a straight answer. I have MAC disease and been searching to find phage therapy but so far a dead end.
