Has anyone had luck with kyphoplasty for compression fractures.

Posted by pinetreestate @pinetreestate, Nov 16, 2023

I am having kyphoplasty on December5, for l1 and l2.
I have osteoporosis and hope this wil stabilize my spine.
Has anyone else had this procedure?
Thank you!

I also feel that it’s so iffy.
It might help, or not.
To go through kyphoplasty and all the recovery, and find out it didn’t work for you, would be depressing.
The doctor did say, it will heal on its own.
Thanks for your help.

I decided not to do it.

I had been down this road.

My doctor ordered X-rays which showed nothing.

The pain went on for weeks. The muscle spasms weee so bad it was like the lower back muscle band was a dishrag that was being wrung; twisted and twisted, tighter and tighter. I could feel the muscles ripping.

Finally got to a pain doctor. He ordered X-rays. Five views instead of the three I had first.

Three lower vertebrae were fractured.

He offered out patient kyhoplasty with local anesthesia.

He told me that my vertebrae would be more prone to refracture in the future.

He repaired the middle one.

I had almost instant relief from the excruciating pain and was able to walk after the procedure.

That was about three years ago.

Since then I have had repeated fractures and am now evaluating the use of Forteo.

I am not taking anything right now.
I did take Fosomax for a couple of years, in my 50’s.
I was not comfortable taking it.
A friend of mine had terrible side effects from this drug.
The side effects from all of them are awful.

I just have a compression fracture and my surgeon didnt propose a kyphoplasty so I am in a support belt only waiting for it to heal on its own.
I must say that my age might be a problem for that procedure, so we will see.

Thank you. Sometime the decisions are hard to take. Our experience is however very valuable.
