I'm re-visiting "Chat" on the topic of Pain from Fibromyalgia, Osteoarthritis, and DJD conditions. Specifically, I want
members comments on their experience with the Rx GABAPENTIN (generic for Neurontin) that my doctor has prescribed for the "global" pain/discomfort/soreness I experience from these "old age" (I'm 78/female) Dx's.
The Medication Guide indicates that Gabapentin can cause some serious side effects (and I already have enough problems) that are very off-putting to beginning this medication.

I would appreciate knowing of other users experience and /or caveats on this Rx.

@ Hello Jeangordon4: I am peach414144 and am answering your request for any other users experience with gabapenten. a month ago I started it with a dose of 300 mgs 2 times a day, Now for the last 6 days i am on 600 mgs. two times a day. I am 80 years of age. The pain in my legs are mostly gone. What a relief as it was very, very bad. I feel as though I am some how being quite "doped" up. I am slower in all I do but not slow enough to be dangerous. I take the pills after dinner and before I go to sleep. THIS ALLOWS ME TO HAVE A CLEAR HEAD TO BE ABLE TO DRIVE MY CAR FOR SHOPPING AND GO TO THE DOCTORS. I read the literature. IF I WOULD FEEL SUICIDAL OR DOING ANYTHING DANGEROUS I WILL IMMEDIATELY STOP THE GABAPENTEN AND NOTIFY THE DOCTOR. ALSO, i MUST VERY CAREFULLY WATCH MY SUGAR COUNT BEING A TYPE 2 DIABETIC AND OTHER NO NO'S, But the pain in the feet and legs are gone. however, when it would be important to stop the drug I will. ANOTHER NO NO IS I AM TYPE ONE BI-POLAR SO I MUST, MUST MUST BE THREE TIMES MORE CAREFULL WITH THIS DRUG. SHOULD THE DOCTOR (WHO KNOWS MY COMPLETE MEDICAL HISTORY) HAVE PRESCRIBED THIS MEDICINE FOR ME? hOPEFULY I WILL BE ABLE TO CONTINUE THIS MEDICATION BECAUSE THE PAIN WAS AWFUL.

Good Morning!
I have been taking Gabapenten for several years. I take 300 mg, 1 in the am and 2 in the pm. I am really not sure it does anything to help me because I've been on it for so long. My brother, who has back issues, too, takes it and swears by it. He finds that it helps him sleep when his pain bothers him.
Good luck!
Ronnie (GRANDMAr)

Hello @jeannegordon4 Nice to hear from you again here on Connect! I am not a medical professional and I acknowledge that each patient acts and reacts uniquely to their condition and medications. My wife was on Gabapentin for many years for foot and lower leg pain. It was the only medication that gave her any (even partial) relief. Her medical staff were careful in their titration of her dosages. She was on 400 mg a day after several months of working on this. She exhibited no adverse reactions nor did she complain of any negative consequences, but she was also on a very complex medication cocktail, of which Gabapentin was only one of the parts.

Strength, Courage, and Peace!

I use Lyrica, (pregabapentin) for the neuropathy. 300 mg. twice a day. I got from Chemo. It's pricey, I pay $332.00 every 2 months but it is extremely effective. I also use Amitriptyline. 25 mg. per day. Throw in a little Baclofen for cramping and I'm good on those fronts.

@peach414144 The gabapentin is helping you with pain? I did not have a positive experience with this. I had all of the rare severe side effects-just my luck. Fibro, etc is ruling my life and I seem helpless against thus. I do what I can on my own holistically.
So many people suffering 🙁

@jeannegordon, I've been taking Gabapentin for many, many years for peripheral neuropathy in my legs and feet with no ill effects. It doesn't make me sleepy, nor does it cause suicidal thoughts. My Dr. has tried many meds to relieve my lower back pain, i.e., Lyrica has not effect. But it's been commented before that everyone reacts differently to the same medication. I wish you luck in your search for relief.

Hi Parus Gabapentin didn't help me with o e either but Dr.tried me on Primapexal this helps my legs ,as you say everyone is different.

I use Lyrica which is also known as pre Gabapentin. I previously tried very large doses of Gabapentin which had no effect on nerve pain but Lyrica was really good on my neuropathy.

Hi,
I know what a tough time you are having. I had Fibro for sooooo many years. I think I finally conquered it. How? It wasn't easy.....I took amitriptyline (spelling? an anti-depression med in a low dose used to sleep) to get me into a deep sleep (where you heal), daily exercise (that started with just walking (my husband literally had to drag me), chiropractor, therapeutic massage and aquatic PT.

Although I think I've got it under control, I have so many other issues that cause chronic pain, I'm just not 100% sure.

I've been on Gabapentin for a long time. I really don't think it helps. I don't believe I have bad affects, but I take so many other things, I am not sure. My brother, on the other hand, who has bad spinal issues (like me...just not as bad), takes it and finds it helps him sleep.

Ronnie

@ yes Parus, there is still some pain but the pain was so severe that i am crying with happiness about the mostly relief I am getting. Because with the 2 bulging disks and the pinched nerve I have in the lower spine and 2 pinched nerves in the upper spine (neck) I was so glad for the help with the peripheral neuropathy pain. With the rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis and the many other painful medical issues I have I do appreciate whatever help I can get. And one way I do get much help is when I help others in any way I can. What a loving feeling it is when I help others. I feel as though you do this as well and we all thank you for this. Peach414144
