Topical creams and lotions for Small Fiber Neuropathy

Posted by jeffrapp @jeffrapp, Oct 11, 2019

This topic has been addressed in other posts. However, it is somewhat scatter shot, so I thought it would be appropriate to address it as a separate subject.
I have idiopathic small fiber neuropathy. I have tried numerous creams and other preparations. Sometimes I think they are working a little, sometimes not at all.
As examples, I have used lidocaine 5%, various cannabinoids (as balms, creams and soaks), cantherides (that hurt!) and various combinations of compounded creams containing lidocaine, ketamine, phenytoin, ketoralac and others (all of which are very expensive and not covered by MediCare).
One of my "theories" is that they are not penetrating enough, so I tried a few of them with DMSO cream, which is a solvent and supposedly penetrates the skin. Still no real success.
I'd be interested to hear from others about their experiences with topicals, and particularly any suggestions or tricks that makes them work better.

I ordered and received my shipment few days ago.
It’s really not doing much for my foot pain, and pins and needles in my feet.
I’ll continue using it and see if it works better.

Maybe your body needs to get used to it. I hope so. I tried lots of things medical marijuana gummies, capsaicin, various creams. Susan’s works for me. Let me know how you progress. Good luck!

Susan-I've tried all the above. My best cream is 5% lidocaine (25 gm) to which I add essential oils. Primarily those that impact cannabinoids. I use 5-8 drops of each lavender, black pepper, frankinsense, rose oil, copaiba. I put it in a squeeze container. Using twice a day, it lasts me about a week when doing both feet. Good Luck

Try Vicks Vapor Rub - I’ve tried many of the above & Vicks seems to work best.

I have tried lots of topicals for small fiber neuropathy that bothers me mostly in my feet at night. For me, the best thing I have found so far is Avon Foot Works Arthritis Achy Foot and Muscle Cream. It's not expensive and works as well or better than any other topical I have tried.

I have been using Susan’s now for a few weeks, and it seems to be working much better now.
Maybe I just needed my feet to get used to it.
I like the fact that it’s not sticky either, like the other cream my podiatrist had ordered me.
I also use Salon Pas pain patches, in between using Susan’s.
Last nite I had a terrible nite, pain in my left foot felt like a Charlie horse, which would come and go every few seconds.
I used everything I had, pain meds, Susan’s ointment, pain patches, etc.
I finally took 2 ibuprofen and must’ve fallen asleep finally at 6:30am.
My poor dog wouldn’t even sleep next to me, she went to sleep with my husband!

Glad it’s starting to give you some relief. That sounded like an awful night. You can also try using cold pads on your foot. I got some from my doctor and keep them in the freezer. Use them mostly on my hands but have used them on my feet. You can also fill a plastic water bottle and freeze it. Sit in a chair or on side of bed and roll your foot over it for 2-3 minutes at a time. Do it several times until your foot feels better. Cold really helps pain. Hope you continue to find things to relieve your pain and maintain a good place for you. If I find anything else I will post it. Hang in there!

Topricin Fibrocream, and/or Volterin (Diclofenac Sodium topical gel, 1% )

In the past year I have been trying various lotions and creams with little success. The most recent test is with a CBD cream: CBDol Topical salve from http://www.thecbdistillery.com It does seem to make a bit more relief from the tingling and pain than other creams. I apply it on my feet and also on my back where the nerve injury occured.

Voltarin used to be by prescription only. Better to buy the generic version, less expensive.
