Pathology 2nd opinion

Posted by jamesharrison @jamesharrison, Nov 6, 2023

Had MRI-guided (trans-perineal) biopsy in Oct. Two of the samples came back with diagnosis of cancer Gleason 3+4=7.

I have appointment with Urology Oncologist Nov 16, and Radiation Onc Nov 20. I am in process of asking Mayo to send my biopsy report and slides to Johns Hopkins for a 2nd opinion. Not sure how long this may take, but likely not to get results until after those two post-biopsy appointments.

I'm wondering if I should keep those appointments, or reschedule so that I have the 2nd-opinion from Johns Hopkins when I meet with them? If I keep the appointments, and the 2nd biopsy reading comes back with different results, I could always make subsequent appointments with the doctors, I suppose. Does this reasoning seem right?

I would remiss if I didn't say, that by sharing on the forum, your messages benefit many, including current and future men diagnosed with prostate cancer. 🙂

@jc76, thanks very much for your reply to me. I’m using Mayo Rochester. Thanks for the info on Decipher; I will explore that.
I am 71 and in reasonably good health. I’ll keep my two upcoming appointments and see what they have to say after answering my questions. On Friday I had Mayo pathology send my slides and biopsy report to Johns Hopkins for a second pathology opinion.
If I may add, last week I attended my first prostate cancer support group at Mayo Rochester, and it was very worthwhile. Coincidentally, the presenter that day was the radiation oncologist I will be seeing November 20. The meetings are held monthly, and I encourage anyone with this disease (family members are also welcome) to consider going if you are within driving distance of Rochester. It’s great to know you are not alone, and much good information is shared.

jamesharrison, you can't beat the provider you are going to. Occasionally Mayo Jacksonville has these types support groups and did one for prostrate cancer a couple of months ago which I attended. Mayo Rochester opens up their support cancer group via web site to others but have been remiss in forgetting to join a meeting.

As I mentioned I am in Jacksonville area and go to Mayo Jacksonville but had my proton radiation treatments at UFPTI ONLY because Mayo Jacksonville did not have proton radiation treatments options like Rochester and Phoenix have.

Good luck!!

jamesharrison, feel free to send me a private message also. Glad to help. I have gone through the testing, treatments and now in recovery. Be glad to explain my experience and why I chose this or that.

Collen is an excellent monitor of the web site and I have used the private message a lot with others. I too did not know how to do it and she explained.
