I had carpal tunnel surgery 7 months ago and still have numbness
I had carpal tunnel surgery on both wrists 7 months ago. My left palm is still very numb and my right hand has numbness in the fingers. My surgeon had me go to hand therapy 8 weeks which did nothing to help. Last week he sent me in for a nerve conduction and EMG test, results will be shared with me tomorrow. Could this still be a healing process or is something wrong?

"The pain and numbness may go away right after surgery or may take several months (up to 12 months) to subside, depending on the degree of median nerve damage from prolonged compression in the carpal tunnel. Try to avoid heavy use of your hand for up to 3 months."
It's good your surgeon is sending you for nerve conduction testing. The nerves usually regenerate from damage and even from severance. Let us know your results.
Best wishes.

Thank you. I will post again after my appointment tomorrow to hear about
the test results.
@garyw2 There can be other causes with overlapping symptoms that were missed. For example, I had carpal tunnel surgery, and it did not correct all the numbness and tingling. It turned out I also had thoracic outlet syndrome which causes the same symptoms by affecting the same nerves where they pass through the neck and shoulders.
Here is some information.

My therapy for TOS is myofascial release therapy done by my physical therapist. Here is some information about that too.

Hi, I am 5 months post op, did it ever get better?
@jaz65 7 months is a long time. Did you have P/T after the surgery?
I’ve had 4 surgeries on my left hand alone including carpal tunnel. I felt better about 4 weeks after.
One thing you might try, massage (deeply) into the muscle on your fore arm just below your elbow.
Hello. I had carpal tunnel syndrome in my left hand for months. Had surgery August of 2023. Went for 4 week postop and was still having awful pain. Orthosurgeon ordered an MRI of my neck. Had my MRI September 13th. Flew back home September 15th, ( I lost my job do to back issues and carpal tunnel syndrome, I held an amazing career for 26 years) I was living in AZ at the time. Saw my results of Cervical MRI and found out I had two severely herniated discs. My carpal tunnel pain was overriding my neck pain. I also had severe lower back pain that started October 2022. Had a MRI and found out I have two severely herniated discs in my lumbar spine. Saw a new primary in MN December 2023. Was referred to neurosurgeon. Saw my neurosurgeon January 2024. Had C5-C6 disctectomy fusion done March 7th 2024. Best decision ever! Then I had lumbar laminectomy/disctectomy at my L4, L5-S1 on May 1st 2024. That surgery helped but didn’t fix completely. Had an emergency appendectomy July 11th 2024. Tried going back to work but couldn’t sit for extended periods, couldn’t drive long distances, couldn’t be on my feet for long periods. I was in a lot of pain. Did meds, injections, many MRIs. Had a 7 inch pocket of fluid buildup in lower back from surgery drained August 13 2024. Caught Covid September 2024. Caught RSV December 2024. January 2025 found out from another MRI I still have severe herniated disc at L5-S1, spinal stenosis, type 1endplate modic changes, arthritis in my lower back. I have gone through every step necessary to avoid surgery and am now having to have spinal fusion done from front and back at my L4,L5-S1 in 4 weeks. I am not happy about it. The severe deterioration from having laminectomy surgery is unbelievable!! I’m doing my best to keep it together but it’s been a rough couple of years! I’m 46 and life caught up to me very quickly. I’m also almost through menopause and started HRT, which has been a huge help with pain symptoms. For anyone in this position I would definitely look into BVN procedure. My pain management team and neurosurgeon team have been amazing through all of this. I was not told of the BVN until recently and it should have been considered before laminectomy surgery, as now I cannot have a BVN done because insurance will not cover it because I had surgery. So my last option is fusion. It’s been a rough road but I got lucky in having all my procedures done and pain helped in just over a year!! Mayo Clinic is absolutely amazing!! I cannot wait to get my life back and get back to AZ!!
