I have had bursitis in my hip since July. Going to physical therapy, had cortisone shots, etc....why do I still have it?

Suggest google: hip bursitis/symptoms/diagnosis/treatment at reputable sights (Mayo, etc), and see how/if you "fit", and definitely 2nd opinion. Xray may not be enough, MRI may be more revealing. You/we need to be informed, not just "told". If we have questions, we require answers, often repeated asking until we get them, Dr Google is not to self-diagnose, but can provide information when we hear "words". I have found that a few 2nd opinions should have been my firsts!

Thank you so much for answering. Yes, I think a 2nd opinion is on the agenda.

shabangy; what--if anything---did they do for the eroded hip joints? Like you, I've had several injections, used the creams for pain, etc, but nothing helps. I do have degenerative disc disease, osteoarthritis, and fibromyalgia, and I am 80. Just wondering if there is any help for the joints??

Hi Dorma - actually I was the one who had eroded hip joints. The femur tops were rough & misshapen. The acetabular cups (the openings in the pelvis) actually looked "raggedy" on the x-rays. The cartilage was nowhere to be found.

The solution was total hip replacement - I had them done 6 weeks apart because I was still working and I could fit them into my "slower" season that way. (Not recommended - recovery from 2 surgeries that close was rough.)

Even though I had some missteps along the way, I have never regretted getting it done - I was 54 and could barely move. Now I am in my 70's and can nearly keep up with my grandsons. I just hope my knees hold up now.

How wonderful that it worked for you!! I don't think I would consider that at my age though. I don't think my pain is nearly as bad as yours must have been.

Have amassed quite a "collection" of interesting Xrays, MRIs, CTs and other things by this age; both hips show narrowing of joint spaces causing intermittent pain, also literal "slipping" of left hip (head of femur out of acetabulum) that has threatened to immobilize me half way between down & back up, so I try to not go there. Most things just normal aging which I'm OK with. It's this getting old piece by piece that is getting in the way of my plan to age gracefully. Is a lot easier to deal with what we know, whatever it is - puts us in control of what we can, and gives us back the power to make the right choices and decisions for ourselves, having medical professionals who have earned our trust. They are out there.

Just back from my second cortisone shot in my hip. I have hip bursitis on one hip. The first shot did not do anything and the pain has been getting worse and has radiated to the knee and the lower leg at night. I will wait a little but if it does not work what should i do? I am 78 years old and otherwise in fairly good health.
