Side Effects of Shingles Vaccine

Posted by ssbionicknee @ssbionicknee, Sep 20, 2018

I got the flu shot and the new shingles vaccination 3 days ago. Today I started feeling sick to my stomach. I've never had a reaction to the flu shot and was wondering if anyone else felt sick after getting the shingles vaccine?

And did you have any side effects? I’m 73, and fully intend to get the vax, but I keep forgetting about it 🫤!

I’m also 73 and am getting the vaccine probably this week. Hoping for the best.

I am 70 and had the first of two shingles vaccines about a month ago. Very sore arm for a few days. Some malaise. My immune system is severely compromised, so it reacts pretty strongly to any vaccines.

On the other hand, I'd rather have the vaccines and figure I am getting some protection, that risk going without. The opportunity for severe illness is nothing to look forward to if I don't keep up on vaccines of all kinds.

I understand what you mean. I had a very dear friend of mine, who contracted shingles. She’s long gone, now, but I just remember what she went through - the misery, the loneliness (since she couldn’t stand feeling any clothing against her skin), and because of that, the fact she couldn’t even go to church. She, of course, had her husband for support, but it really took a toll on her. I don’t want to go thru that. I’ve had 7 major spine surgeries, plus a broken hip (when I fell), so I’m already “damaged.” The last thing I need is shingles!
I’m going to make it my mission to get this vaccine if it’s the last thing I do!
Good luck to you!

I had the shingles vaccine within the last year or two, and I had no side effects.

I was told that the 2nd shot may cause flu like symptoms for a few days post vaccine, but I had no reaction. It did burn a little going in, but that was short lived. just a few seconds really.
My sister had hers and was punky for a few days. My brother reacted to the first one and was told not to get the second.
Guess we all react differently.

I got the first dose the end of January 2023. Everything was fine for the first three days. The fourth day my arm started hurting at the injection site and I started having an achy warm body feeling but no fever. That night I noticed my heart beating noticeably a bit faster as I was trying to sleep. The next day, I was feeling really off, dizzy, ringing in ears, blurry vision, palpitations, chest tightness and difficulty getting a full breath. My blood pressure spiked as high as 179/96. It is usually around 133/80. I had had a cardio stress echo the week before the vaccine. Contacted my Cardiologist who suggested that the Shingrix vaccine was driving some inflammatory reaction and that it should probably subside in a few days. It did not. Went to the ER and they did blood tests & chest xray. Some signs of anemia, off electrolytes and also really high monocytes. Saw primary care doctor who immediately seemed to want to have nothing to do with it when I mentioned what the Cardiologist had suggested - that it was related to the vaccine. He is no longer my doctor. Now a month later, still having BP spikes and trying to find a doctor that will help. Going back to Cardiologist next week.

I have just had the same experience, Have you found a way to reverse the effects? My BP is routinely 120/80 +/- 5pts. Was sent to ER after spiking to 234/112. I never had an adverse reaction to any vaccines until now. Any guidance would be helpful!

I am still dealing with some of the (mainly neurological) after effects of Shingrix. I would advise you to go the VAERS website ( https://vaers.hhs.gov/reportevent.html ) and report this.
The blood pressure spikes lasted about 10 weeks, gradually more or less getting closer to normal. My doctor put me on Amlodipine for blood pressure, but it made my chronic fatigue much worse. I found some celery extract supplement that I took for a while that seemed to help slightly to lower HBP. Mainly, it seemed like most of the BP spikes followed meals and I also had some bad gastro effects starting right after the vaccine. I ended up having to cut a lot of things out of my diet for a while and still can not tolerate some things I used to be able to eat.

So sorry to hear that you've had such a dramatic rise in blood pressure in response to getting the shingles vaccine. I know that everyone is different and respond differently. Fortunately, I didn't have any side effects to the first or second shot, but many people on this thread have. Is your blood pressure still spiking as high as it did right after the shot, or has it settled back down? What did the docs in the ER say and do? Did they put you on any medications? If you're still dealing with this adverse effect, I pray that you get complete resolution sooner rather than later and once again get back to your norm of 120/80. ❤️

The ER staff was dumbfounded! EKG and labs were ok. Been on Amlodipine 5mg for last 5 days. BP finally coming down, 169/104. The only issue, relative or not, was I just started taking Omeprazole. This was 2 days after 1st dose of Shingrix. I'm finding this med might have increased the bp as well. Not sure how to determine root cause! Hope my PCP can make sense of this.
