Ostomy follow-up: How often and Who do you follow up with?

Posted by timgalloway @timgalloway, Nov 5, 2023

I’ve had my colostomy now for 2 years and was wondering how often do you see your doctor. What type of doctor do you see for your ostomy follow up. I’ve read the first 5 years after surgery are most important.

Usually the gastroentologist annually and at other times the GP. Actually spend more time w/ pain treatment specialists than any of the others.

@timgalloway, do you see an ostomy/wound nurse as part of your cancer team?

@colleenyoung i saw an ostomy nurse before surgery to get marked up and for about 20 minutes after surgery to teach me how to handle my appliance. I see my PCP but for other issues only.

Your correct Colleen, I have an ostomy for about 40 years for UC, And I will talk with an ostomy/would nurse for just about any issues. If she can't answer my question/concerns she will help me find someone who can.
Thanks
