Dental extraction while taking Prolia,

Hi Justin, I do not take Prolia or any other meds for bone health. I have not gone to Dentist yet kind of chicken. I have discussed with my Dr. and he said the Dentist and him will talk. I guess because I have never had any bone lesions so maybe that's why I'm not on Medications for it. I see my Dr. again in Nov so I will discuss it further with him, I really need to see a Dentist. I did see 2 of them but I was nervous when they said they put in temp dentures on the same day. Then for a second opinion he said he would put crowns on my front teeth because they try and save teeth but my are loose at the top that was real crazy! If you need to talk just get me on here.

I have been on Prolia injections for several years. During those years I had one tooth extraction and it went well enough. This time I need my front tooth removed and will wear a temporary resin tray of some sort u til the bone and graph heals long enough to move forward with a permanent implant. My dentist has me in antibiotics and a few days before the procedure to start this dental rinse. He told me that being in Prolia increases my chances of healing properly and there is a 3% of the implant failing. He is a great dentist and I have known him for over 20 years. I know he is concerned about me being on Prolia and having this procedure. Can someone help me understand what is going onv I thought having Prolia injections every 6 months is suppose to help my bones?

Since you have had dental work in the past while on Prolia, and it was a successful procedure, it seems to me you should be okay. All of these medications that strengthen our bones seem to pose a slightly higher risk for problems. If you find out why this is true, please let me know. I am about to go on Prolia, after much thought and research about these choices. I will keep you in my prayers.

I had the same procedure you are talking about while on Prolia. Front tooth extracted and implant installed. I followed all instructions and after a few months had a new tooth and no further problems. Sounds like your dentist is well aware of Prolia and will take good care of you. Good luck!

Thank you. You made me feel very relieved. He wants me to do a rinse called Closys. Start a few days before extraction and after also. I am on antibiotics for 2 weeks before extraction. His concern was that the graph would have problems. It is a swine graph basically and will eventually be part of my bone when it heals. Then he will do the permanent implant. I will wear a tray of resin teeth after he extracts my front tooth. The tray will have about 4or 5 teeth that will go over my teeth and support the fake front tooth. This will be in my mouth for almost a year depending how quick I heal. There was an option of taking some medication that would help with the healing but stain my teeth big time for a year. I opted out. I had yellow teeth growing up in the 50s from tetracycline. I was in my 40s before I got my teeth whitened by zoom. I cried because I never smiled until that day. I won’t go back. So the other option was this rinse. I have survived breast cancer twice and 6 months of aggressive chemotherapy. And you know I have a warrior spirit no doubt. Yet this extraction is getting the best of me because it’s my front tooth and Prolia is a medicine that helps my bones. I guess I won’t get my next shot in 5 more months. I know I'm replying to an old post but how did your extraction go? I'm having an extraction next week and have had 3 Prolia shots so far. I was wondering what antibiotic your Oral surgeon had you take? I'm more concerned with side effects from the antibiotic than the actual extraction! I'm allergic to amoxicillin. Thank you

Hi @sshoop56 Let your oral surgeon know that you’re allergic to Amoxicillin…there are alternatives. Quite often, if a patient requires prophylactic antibitotics before dental treatment, it’s a one-time dose taken an hour before the procedure…though your oral surgeon may have a different protocol.
If you’re concerned about the side effects of the antibiotic, from my experience with having to take long term antibitoics, is to eat fat free, plain yogurt twice daily (at least 2 hours before or after the meds) while on the antibiotics and also up to a week or more after your last dosage. This helps keep a level of normalcy in your gut biome. Antibitoics aren’t discriminating…they kill all the gut bacteria, good and bad. So you want to keep up a balance of healthy bacteria. Yogurt does that! Also eating other healthy pre and probiotic foods. Fermented foods are really healthy like raw sauerkraut, kefir, add apple cider vinegar to salads, etc., and avoid refined sugars and processed foods.
I toss in berries or other fruit in the yogurt to make it palatable. If you can’t stomach plain, then flavored yogurt is ok too. Just make sure they have active yogurt cultures. A good Greek yogurt is best but even products like Activia help to keep a balance of good bacteria. The reason for the plain, no sugar yogurt, is to cut down on potential for a yeast infection.
