Had my JP drains removed today, and was pleasantly surprised
There wasn’t pain! I had expected it to be very painful. One blogger I read had indicated it was painful for her.
But for me I barely felt anything at all. It was just kind of an odd feeling for a couple of seconds and then it was all done.
Now I just need to keep the area clean with fresh gauze for a few days until the holes close and the slight oozing stops. No big deal.
And boy do I ever feel WAY more comfortable without those drains in!
I had continual burning pain from the drain on the right side, and a kind of skin irritation pain, that wasn’t bad, but it was noticeable and unpleasant.
As soon as the drain came out, the pain left and hasn’t come back since. Hurrah!
I am feeling very happy today to not need drains any longer and to have them out!

I agree about how good it feels to have the drain removed. Just a moment of discomfort and then it was out. What a relief!!
I agree. I was amazed at how fast the hole closed. I will say with my third surgery it kind of made a suction sound when my last tub3 was removed. All i know is i knew nothing about tubs until i got them after breast surgery. My sister helped me after my 1st surgery, I was an old pro keeping it clean the next two.
@msandbreastcancerwarrior, nice report. How is recovery going? Are you doing post-surgical exercises?
I’m getting a bit better with each passing day. It’s becoming easier for me to sleep in a recliner. I’m getting used to it and sleep as well as I did in a regular bed now.
My doctors are pleased enough with how I am healing up so far.
Thank you for asking.
I am walking around the house to prevent clots and doing shoulder rolls and the few exercises I am allowed to do at this point. I still have to be careful not to move in ways that would do more harm than good at the moment.
Yes...I felt soo much better too when my drains were taken out!!

Well, another 10 days have gone by. How are you doing with your recovery now? How is your range of motion in your arms?
I had a double mastectomy on February 27 My drains were removed yesterday woke up this morning with swelling and leakage. I went to surgical nurse that removed the drains yesterday This morning she told me that she had never seen the drains pull out the way My drains did she drew me a picture and explained They were wrapped circular, and when they were removed, the drain pulled along the chest wall in a downward scooping this now is making my body try to heal the new damage that was done to my skin . I may have to go in and have an ultrasound and fluid removed with needles. I was told to rest today don’t lift my arms and call them tomorrow if the swelling increases. . Anybody had this problem?
Just wanted to check in and see how you are doing. Personally I haven't had drains, but from what I know from friends who have, this does indeed sound very unusual. Has the situation improved at all? How are you feeling?
@dmjude Hope you are doing better. If the drains weren’t draining properly, this may be the result. I had two drains for at least 2 weeks. We kept track of the amount of drainage each day. The removal was based on this. Blessings.
Just got back from surgeons office decided to put a drain in on the right side . It was done in the office with an ultrasound they remove 40 mL. I did not do anything for the left side because the fluid is absorb back into the body they think the right side swelled because this is the arm I use the most might be the reason that the fluid filled up again on the right side after the removal of the first drain. I think they took it out too soon.
