IMRT sessions finished now waiting

Posted by erkbiz @erkbiz, Oct 25, 2023

Back in March I was diagnosed with Gleason 9 prostate cancer, PSA 11.
In April started hormon therapy, (Firmagon). In July got a six month dosage of Eligard and scheduled a consult with radiology. Just finished 30 days of IMRT and now have to wait 3 months before a valid PSA can be measured....the wait is stressful. Have those of you who have had radiation therapy had successful outcomes at lowering your PSA?

I understand that surgery and radiation are equally effective but surgery has some post treatment benefits A 3 month delay to test PSA us customary. This cancer is serious but slower growing than most cancers Good Luck to you.

erkbiz: I had 3+4=7 and 10.2 psa. 5 hypo fractional radiation treatments finished in February. In March, psa was 4.61, in May 2.99 and in September 1.4.

I completed 39 sessions of IMRT in early August. I had a PSA test and follow up with the RO approximately 30 days later. My pre-treatment PSA was 4.63 and the post-treatment one was 1.66. The RO scheduled my next check for 6 months later, though I have a routine annual appointment with my PCP next month and that will likely include another PSA check as part of the blood work typically associated with that kind of visit. Good luck.

FYI: PSA testing recommendations generally include using the same lab for consistent comparable results.
Best wishes.

I had radiation therapy about 10 years ago after I was diagnosed stage 4 prostate cancer and 6 months into ADT. It was not standard of care for stage 4 disease at that time, but I did my research and decided to go with it. My initial PSA was >100. PSA right before radiotherapy was 0.5-1.0. It decreased slowly but test-to-test consistently to undetectable. Now radiotherapy to the primary tumor is recommended for stage 4 disease with low-volume metastasis. I think you will see good results. Gook luck!

I had a gleason 10,PSA was on a steep rise, started orgovyx, then 45 Radiation. First PSA was at zero. I am on orgovyx now for 14 months on a 2 year plan, and psa still at zero. All Doctors are very pleased as am I with the results so far.

Yes, 6 months after radiation and continuously on Abiraterone and Zoladex, my PSA kept coming down steadily, last month it was 0.03 and yesterday's result came back with < 0.01 (undetectable).
You are sure to get good results. Keep smiling.
