Does anyone have brown patches on their legs between ankles and knees

Posted by llg @llg, Sep 26, 2023

I have asked neurologists, dermatologists etc. if anything can be done to soften the appearance of these discolored areas on my legs. Most doctors feel it is caused by poor circulation. They suggest wearing thigh high compression hose. That will help the circulation, but not the appearance of my legs.

Yes I do and they look terrible

I've had the reddish brown spots on my legs most of my adult life. I do wear compression socks after being diagnosed with lymphedema in my legs. They help control the swelling and guessing they also help with the circulation. Moving more actually is one of the best things you can do. Another perk is that the compression socks do cover the ugly brown spots 🙂

Yes, and not said to be from poor circulation, so compression socks don’t help. My guess is mine is from being fair skinned and freckled, with many years of sun abuse. I have always lived in HOT summers, so I WILL wear shorts. I am so glad to say my not-so-pretty legs no longer bother me. Folks already have to look at my walker, cane, or ugly shoes & socks as I walk by, but I’m thankful I can walk and am focused on trying to keep it that way. That’s not to say I wasn’t ever focused on trying to help the appearance of my legs, it’s just that I gave up on that battle 😊

I have them all over my lower legs!!
They look terrible. I guess compression hose is the “go to” answer when “who knows?” Seems to be the answer. It seemed like I got them overnight.

I cover mine up with compression socks 🙃 not that it makes them look any better. I also have lymphedema in my legs which is why I have to wear compression socks. Here's some information that may explain it a little better.

My doctor told me that the discoloration was because my blood is not being returned to my heart from my feet and up my legs. He recommended compression socks. I use those and I walk a good bit and I do exercises to keep the circulation in my legs moving. I also use Incrediwear products that are supposed to keep the circulation moving without compression. Expensive but I can use my Incrediwear at night too. I don't have the pooling anymore. I don't know which helps the most. I do know that if I stop what I'm doing for a couple days the pooling returns.

I had Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) over 20 years and poor circulation. I will be on blood thinners the rest of my life due to poor circulation in my legs. I, too, have discoloration because of the poor circulation. For me this is a separate issue I had for years before the onset of neuropathy.
