Simultaneous hip replacement?
I’m scheduled to have hip replacement surgery next month. The surgeon said he could/would do both at the same surgery. I’m just not sure what to do. I need them both done and I have been in pain since late last summer. I’m anxious to be mobile and less pain as I was normally quite active. If I do one at a time it seems everything will drag on into fall and winter. But worried about things like getting in and out of bed, on and off the toilet, etc, with both hips being surgically repaired.
I would like to hear from others who had both hips done at the same surgery.

Sue brought up some excellent points. I don’t know your age or overall health and fitness level. I just had my right hip replaced in January. I was a reasonably fit active 71 y.o. I developed anemia with the surgery and it took me longer than anticipated to get better. This was my first major surgery since my last C-section in 1984. It was a definite shock to my body!I cannot imagine if both of my hips were operated on.
I had several shots for back pain usualy 3 or 4 months apart. The last time I had one, before I got to the car I was so cold I felt like I was freezing, so I can relate to your being cold. I called the office concerned, only to have to leave a msg. No call back after 2 days. I was still feeling very cold, wrapped in lots of blankets & even using the heating pad, very little help. I called several more times to the Dr. office, I never got a call back. Very upset to say the least. I just wanted to know if this was a normal reaction, which I stated when I left my msg on their ans. machine. Needless to say, I never went back. This was about 7 or 8 yrs ago. To this day, I am still cold. I asked my regular Dr., she has no answer either. All my blood work comes back normal. I am still cold, but not like I was right after that last shot. I keep our A/C at 80 all year. It helps, but I am even cold at that. I wear socks all the time at home to help my feet, which is the coldest part of me and dress for warmth. My regular Dr. has checked me for circulation, it is normal. There is just no answer. There should be a reason, but noone has any answers. I also had back surgery 2 yrs ago, At least it didn't add to my being cold, but now facing hip surgery, but am not sure if I should have it. I have no pain, so have been putting it off. I can't see how anyone could have both done at the same time. I am wondering if age has anything to do with the coldness. I am now 84. Luckily I am in good health otherwise. Your being cold, too, is the first time I have ever heard someone else having this problem. My hair is also thinning, but I think it is age related. Hope you are better.
I’m so glad I didn’t have both hips done at the same time. I can’t imagine how one would get around at all. Good luck !
I am no longer feeling the cold but then again its hot and humid. I went to get testing a few months ago for an ongoing issue that I thought was related to the surgery. All the tests came back negative. The radiologist told me that they do not know what trauma does to the body (surgery) so that would account for feeling cold all the time but as for the other issue, no one knows.
I had a great surgeon in an excellent hospital YET his PA sometimes went 3-6 days before responding to an email. When I needed an answer right away, I went around her and was very successful at finding someone else on his staff who DID THEIR JOB! Thank goodness he had a large staff!
So, did you have BILATERAL HIP REPLACEMENT jerelyn? I am scheduled for same M, 10/23/23..I hope it goes well..anterior approach..outpatient..home same day is anticipated..
So did you have both hips done then Jerelyn? I am scheduled for both same time...anterior approach...outpatient ...home same day is anticipated...my surgery is M, 10/23/23
No I I opted to do left in July and right is planned for 11/1
Hi Jerelyn, I think I might have been one of those who discouraged you from simultaneous surgery.
Now that you have recently had your surgery, what would be your advice to @shoppingdiane? How do you think your recovery might have gone with both hips done at the same time & going home the day of surgery?
Sue
I can’t imagine how difficult it would be having both hip AC done at one shot. I needed help getting in and out of bed, on and off the toilet, showering. The swelling and numbness is starting to abate just now. I’m going to have the right hip done on November 1. Not looking forward to it but it needs to be done.
My surgery for BILATERAL HIP REPLACEMENT was cancelled on M, 10/23/23. Rescheduled to M, 12/04/23 now. I am reading posts in this support group about thigh pain after replacements. It's really scaring me. I do also have bulging discs in my back which cause pain as well. My Ortho surgeon told me the hip replacements wont fix my back--I understand that. I am wondering how common the thigh pain is. I really need pain relief--I don;t want any thigh pain after the replacements.
