Hydrocephalus VP Shunt

My son had VP shunt surgery 5 months ago and has had intense abdominal pain ever since. The neurosurgeon who installed the shunt is only focused on whether the shunt is working, and sent us to a general surgeon. The general surgeon refused to help, and in fact prevented us from seeking a second opinion within the same hospital. The hospital's stance is apparently: "we've never seen this, so it's impossible".

We presented them with the "Right Lower Quadrant Abdominal Pain" case study cited above but they won't operate unless something is evident in a CT scan, and it isn't. We're scheduled to see surgeons in two other facilities over the next 3 weeks, hopefully one of them can help.

Has anyone had an experience like this? In the instance of a rare complication like this, do you have to find a doctor who has personally experienced it before in order for them to attempt treating it?

Welcome to Mayo Connect!
I’m sorry you are stuck like this. How old is your son?
Someone obviously has to evaluate his abdominal pain.
My recommendation is to find a Pediatric surgeon.
