Shingrix is not an mRNA medicine but it has some similarities (recombinant). Zostavax is an attenuated virus vaccine but is no longer available in the U.S.

In a round about way I helped lead to a shingles vaccine. In the 80's friends who suffered from shingles would ask me if I had any suggestions. I would tell them to ask their Dr for a chicken pox vaccination - but don't say that it is for shingles because then they cannot administer it. The Drs always figured it out and my friends continued to suffer.

I would tell the Dr's that it is the same virus; unbelievably, they would argue that if they had chicken pox as a child they were immune to the virus -- impossible of course. I theorized that the original virus had migrated to the myelin sheath of the nerve fibers and gone dormant - to be re-energized years later with age.

In the 90's a researcher in Japan adopted this theory and invented the original shingles vaccine. Hopefully he is rich... and I am, well, you know... :^)
