Right hip replacement

Posted by youbgsterinva1953 @youbgsterinva1953, Sep 14, 2023

I’m having my hip replaced in one week on 21 September’23 will the pain get better, because I can hardly walk anymore and I used to walk around with no problem. I refuse to admit I might be getting old but I don’t want to. I’m a young 70

I started driving at about 3 weeks post op. Everyone’s recovery is different. I started PT a few days after surgery. I had some soreness and pain for several months after surgery. I didn’t start sleeping on the operative side until about 7 months after surgery. I used tylenol to sleep at night for about 6 weeks. Walking and PT is the best thing you can do to recover. After 6 months, i felt almost back to normal- still working on getting my strength back. Good luck!

Strength takes a while. I was squatting over 200 lbs with my bad hip and now I can barely squat my body weight.

Patience and consistency will pay off.

yes, but in my case it is unrelated to surgery. It is called polyuria nocturia. More urine is produced at night and relatively little during the day. I have been told it results from the kidney's overproduction of urine at night. Normally there is a hormone called desmopressin which makes the kidneys less active at night. Apparently this can wane as you get older leading to nighttime bathroom visits. It is a very frustrating problem. I have seen a number of doctors about it with no real resolution. I would love to know if anyone has had any success dealing with this problem.

Thank you. Very interesting. I did not have before surgery, so I think surgically related, but I am going to investigate your issue if mine does not improve.

After a hip replacement has anyone experienced frequency in urination? A culture was done, but no uti. Just curious if anyone has had this experience. My hip was done 3 weeks ago.

At first I had scimpy urine, then symptoms of a UTI. Tests showed a mild UTI and I took an antibiotic for it. It was like the flood gates opened up and I was up all night. The next morning all the “swelling” in my leg was gone and it was clear that it was fluid retention, not swelling. I am almost 4 weeks after surgery and I am only now returning to more normal urination, but still getting up several times/night.

@dratprice, how long ago was your surgery ? For several months after my surgery , it felt like there was a stick in my upper thigh. I am now 9 months post’op and don’t have that feeling any more.

@walk4life life My surgery was 8.21. I hate to say I’m happy to hear that 😀. I was scared something had loosened, but i followed directions to the tee! I don’t always feel it either. I was thinking pt may help with it Thanks for your response !!

Welcome to Mayo Connect. I had really bad pain before I knew it was my hips (docs had always blamed my back) so I rode a bicycle. When I couldn't manage that anymore, I switched to a stationary bike or walking in the pool. I feel they kept my quads strong and that helped with recovery.
Are any of those possible for you?
Sue
PS I was also eating NSAIDS like candy - that I do not recommend. It took my stomach years to recover.

Right
Riding a stationary bike and water walking will help with recovery and do your PT afterwords
You will be so glad
Hardly any pain after replacement!
Good luck
