Undecided choice of drugs for Osteoporosis

Posted by peace44 @peace44, Oct 10, 2023

I am 80 years old women and have borderline osteoporosis which affects my entire body. My doctor wants me to take Prolia and the Rheumatologist wants me to take Reclast. I’m unhappy with both choices as the side effects are great and I do not tolerate new drugs well. I am very undecided and am considering doing not taking annty drugs for this condition. I have never had a fracture and I’m very active Any opinions or advice.

Good morning @peace44. Welcome to Connect. This is a group that believes in sharing experiences as a way to learn more about our conditions and opportunities. I am 81 years old and had borderline osteoporosis. I did not learn anything from my mother about this aging issue. I was 75 when I began to think about my bone issue. I did two years of Tymlos without any side effects. My body seems to handle daily small doses of medication. What I can't handle is larger doses given periodically.

I ran into trouble with Prolia and experienced joint pain and jaw pain. With my PCP's acceptance, I went to Mayo Clinic and met a currently updated endocrinologist who understood my situation. He recommended weekly tablets of Alendronate which has been around a long time. That is working well for me. My body isn't overwhelmed with huge infusions. Reclast is another option. My understanding is that it will support your newly assisted bones. Perhaps @windyshores might have some time to respond to your inquiry. She is considering Reclast after Tymlos and might have helpful information for you.

May you be safe, protected and free of inner and outer harm.

I am also trying to decide between Reclast or Fosomax. I think that I read that Reclast is better at keeping bone growth after Forteo.

My doc is following Tymlos up with a 20% test dose of Reclast with IV hydration and slow infusion. He much prefers it to alendronate but if I could tolerate that once a week (which I didn't in the past) I would consider that if I cannot tolerate Reclast.

@peace44 if you are borderline, maybe you can wait!

Why do you think osteoporosis is affecting your whole body? Osteoporosis does not have symptoms. Do you think you may have arthritis?

According to the Rheumatologist and after reviewing my bone density tests, she told me I was borderline but the bone loss was over my entire body. I didn’t question her at that moment because I really wasn’t sure what to ask. Her only choice of drug is Reclast and she doesn’t like Prolia or any of the daily, weekly or monthly pills. I’m doing my own research. Frax 10 Risk
Major Osteoporotic Fracture 19,5%
Hip Fracture 6.9%
Thanks for your input

Forgot to add I would prefer taking a natural supplement. I don’t take medication well. I feel I’m to old to take a variety of medicines and I’ve never taken anything for Osteo. Any advise on natural medications.

I just read a study on the difference between taking a bone builder before Prolia and bisphosphonates or after. The difference was shocking: in some cases the latter had half the effectiveness. It is much much better to take Eventity, Tymlos or Forteo before a bisphosphonate or Prolia!

The endocrinologist I see would advise against medication for borderline osteoporosis. I, on the other hand (with no particular knowlege of anything) would be alarmed at the suggestion of Prolia. And would advise against reclast. But would suggest you look at Forteo.
It is just that if you fracture your life will change in ways you can't imagine. I've read that more fractures occur in osteopenic women than in osteoporotic women.
Trabecular bone structure is poorly depicted on dxa. Have you had a TBS. That is where we lose bone the fastest because there is more surface area to this type of bone.
Some people never fracture. I'm not taking the risk and have been on Forteo since April without negative effect.
70% of women 80 or older have osteoporosis. Congratualtions.

That’s for great information. Forteo sounds good but I have no insurance that covers Forteo and it’s thousands per month. I need a drug which is covered under Part B of Medicare and that’s Prolia and Reclast. I don’t care for either. I currently looking for a drug that’s natural. I only have one prescription for High Blood Pressure so I’m unaccustomed to an ongoing drugs.
