12 years cancer free now suddenly stage 4 pleural effusion

Posted by relapse @relapse, Oct 1, 2023

Dr took me off letrozole last year after 11 years. This year blood work showed elevated cancer markers. Just had pet scan that showed no cancer, just small pleural effusion which tested positive for breast cancer cells. Dr says no cure

I am so sorry to hear this news. Maybe no cure, but stabilization, possibly.

Hello @relapse like @katgob said above, no cure, but maybe management. This has to be a terrible blow for you, I hope you have family and friends to help you process this hardship.
Since I know nothing of your situation except what you posted above, I can’t say if your cancer is similar to mine or not but I can tell you that progression free metastatic breast cancer is a thing. There are a few of us here on connect. In some cases breast cancer along with other cancers can now be treated more like a managed disease.
All hope is not lost❣️I would say that a second or even a third opinion might be helpful.
Are you being treated at a specialized cancer? If not is there any chance of getting to one for a consult?

This is my second opinion from bc specialist. Stage 4 Est+, Her2+ invasive lobular. No tumor, just lots of bc cells on chest wall. Started back on letrozole last month, start herstatin this week. I never even heard the word before last month, but I REALLY hate the word palliative!!

I used to hate the word palliative because it used to be pretty interchangeable (at least in my rural setting) with hospice. Now, it is more about making you comfortable while the treatments do their job. Honestly it still has a negative feel in my mind, but I know it isn’t giving up. If there is no tumor, only BC cells and they are giving you herceptin, and letrozole they are actively treating these cells. The treatments kind of stink but they could be knocking this thing back to a manageable place.
When is your first treatment with herceptin? Are you getting it alone or with another agent at the same time?

Dear Relapse, I'm so sorry to hear your news. I am in the same situation with markers increasing last year and confirmed MBC in December via lung biopsy. The pleural fluid build up caused severe respiratory issues and I've had 3 thorocentesis to drain. MBC is not curable but definitely manageable. I began treatment with Verzenio, since it is a pill it falls under prescription insurance. Very expensive but Eli Lilly has a plan called Lilly Cares, your oncologists nurse can help with the application, that covered my copay. Diarrhea is the main issue with this drug. Unfortunately, after 6 months, a pet scan established the Verzenio was no longer effective. I began chemo (Abraxane) the first 6 treatments full dosage and resulted in getting the cancer under control. Dosage was reduced by 20% dramatically improving my life balance. I will be on this chemo until it is no longer effective at which time we'll try another chemo. I share all this to let you know, while the diagnosis sounds devastating (I thought I was at end of life), there are options that will allow you to have as much of normal life as possible for quite some time. God Bless!
