Chronic UTI

Posted by clkurth @clkurth, Sep 30, 2023

I keep getting UTIs about once a month. I’m guessing my immune system is weak in my bladder. I take cranberry gummies daily, use good hygiene, take D-Mannose supplements and have doubled my water intake. Anyone have any other suggestions?

I went through that recently to the point I was wondering if it was something in the water! I’m now using an estrogen cream 2x a week and it’s obvious that it’s helping as I haven’t had a UTI since I started using it. I think it’s weird that that was prescribed but I know I’m not the doctor lol, so I went with the suggestion. If after a couple of months without success I’d be back with the doctor to discuss the water option again…

@clkurth Your doctor may need to do a culture to see what antibiotics will best address your recurring UTI. And make sure you are taking the correct one for the right amount of time.

What are they currently prescribing for you?

Most recently, Keflex. All cultures say Ecoli. Bactrum and Cipro were not effective. I’ve asked about a routine low dose of Macrobid, but was advised this approach is a last resort since it is hard on the kidneys and can build up a resistance. I’d rather not take heavy antibiotics anyway. They wipe me out.

I always drink half glass water before coffee, pop, juice— and l quit alcohol. Are use the d-mannose and cranberry. Also, it is a big does d-mannose morning and evening. Spastic bladder reacts almost instantly to alcohol and above drinks very quickly. IF this happens, l run for full glass water. Dilution of those stimulants helps immensely!!! Alcohol use not worth the discomfort !

Appreciate this info. I don’t drink alcohol or coffee or any carbonated substances.

Do you take D -Mannose capsules or powder? Just curious what folks think works best?

I am quadriplegic, and I am prone to UTIs. About five years back, I found something online about foods that eat E. coli in the bladder. Cranberries, cherries, blueberries, apples, green beans, broccoli, and cabbage. I started taking a cranberry supplement, eating blueberries, every other day, having green beans with supper, three times a week, drinking cherry juice, and having broccoli once in a while. I haven’t had one since. I did also increase my water intake. You might not need to have these things as much as I did. This has been my experience.

Fosfomycin, it’s a powder that I have to mix with 3 or 4 ounces of water. It’s a one dose med which I ❤️. I’m allergic to most antibiotics and an arm’s length if not 2, of most meds so finding something that doesn’t make me sicker and that works is a true blessing. And with all those allergies and the constant recurring UTIs they always do a culture.

I’ve had so many UTIs over the years.Bactrim caused a dive in my GFR, from which I never fully recovered. I am on methenamine Hippurate (Hiprex) 1/2 g a day. I used to take a full gram but my Mayo nephrologist reduced it to half.

Has anyone used Nettle as an over the counter treatment? I have read that this works well as a preventative agent for both urinary tract issues and kidney problems, since it supposedly helps flush bacteria out of the urinary tract.
