Improving bone density with exercise - jumping
I am specifically interested in how to do this jumping when you have osteoporosis and are old so you don’t do more damage. Has anyone had experience with one of these mini trampolines for example? What other kinds of exercises make sense? Is slow jogging enough of a bounce to help?

Hi @serious, Dr. Alyssa Kuhn has some stomping exercise videos on You Tube, which you can take a look at to see if those might be suitable for you.
My doctor just recommended a personal trampoline (rebounder) to improve the bone density in my hips. I'm starting slowly. Earth and Owl has a number of rebounder workouts, also on YouTube, for persons of varying abilities. When I was doing it on my own, my knees were sore, but then found out I wasn't jumping correctly.
I didn't buy one with a handlebar, but they are available.
Dr. Loren Fishman has an ongoing study of yoga poses, selected to improve bone density. You can find "12 Poses vs Osteoporosis" on You Tube. Dr. Fishman has modified poses for those with osteoporosis, osteopenia, and the classic poses. I've been doing them everyday.
Wishing you the best!
Thank you. I will check this out.
Margaret Martin videos demonstrate heel drops. I do them every day but won't know for a few more months if they have helped yet.
As I was walking down a flight of steps, I realized I was doing a form of heel drop. Check that out the next time you are going down stairs.
Dr. Greger says jumping up and down 50 times per day is enough exercise for bone density. He also believes in exercise, exercise. My physical therapist said to do heel drops. ( go up on tip toes and then drop heel gently). I am 80 and haven’t dared to jump up and down but who knows the the future may hold..LOL. Good luck. Dr. Greger also said trampoline isn’t helpful for bone density.
I am with you in fearing jumping up and down. About the most I would do are heel drops and stairs.
I have started jumping jacks in the pool. Shallow end. I wonder if this counts.
Margaret Martin, a licensed Canadian physical therapist who specializes in patients with osteoporosis, demonstrates lots of great exercises, including balance exercises. Here is her website: https://melioguide.com . Much of her content is free; some requires modest payments. One of the things I learned from her is that for maximum benefit for bone density from walking, you need to walk at least 3.1 MPH.
I have ordered her books and watched her on-line videos. She is fantastic and has some very well thought out, practical, easy to do, advice. I'd highly recommend her to anyone looking for a good home workout program.
I like exercises and programs where the concentration is on the exercise rather than a lot of miscellaneous talk. While this talk can be useful at times, if what you want is to do something, it really takes a lot of extra time. Which of her videos is just exercise?
