Questions and Advice

Hello all,
My situation may be unusual, but I’m just looking for opinions and suggestions.
Approximately 18 months ago, I noticed my blood pressure rising to very high levels despite several medications for control.
I went in to see my PCP and he decided to try some different meds to help me out. About the same time I began losing weight and becoming extremely constipated.
He suggested fiber and the standard remedies that help for some people.
He suggested I consider a colonoscopy to rule out the “bad” stuff meaning colon cancer or other cancers.
I had a colonoscopy done in 2022 by the same GI I had been seeing for regular following for the previous 10 years.
The results were normal except for diverticulosis which isn’t unusual in a 69 year old male.
His suggestion was to continue on Mirilax and continue moving forward.
I have had occasional issues over the years but only for short times.
PCP kept pushing water, fiber, diet, and all the standard things people are told to try.
My diet actually had improved greatly and is now the best it’s ever been in my entire life. My wife and I made a commitment to do the best we could
in that area.
For the next 7 months I tried everything I could to improve the situation including pelvic floor physical therapy, exercise, and many trips into the PCP for regular lab work and more ideas.
Finally I found a highly regarded colo-rectal surgeon who viewed CT scans and felt I had a “stricture”.
More bowel tests including a gastro graffin enema, simoidmoidoscopy , and finally she felt she needed to view the exterior of the bowel using laparoscopy. While most of the tests were “normal” she felt my symptoms were to major for slight abnormalities.
During the laparoscopic surgery she removed the sigmoid colon and hoped that would improve my situation.
I healed and seemed to be a bit better but now after another 9 months and a variety of laxatives, I’m no better and actually very very discouraged.
I will see her in a month, but short of colostomy or ileostomy, I’m not really sure there is more she can do.
I often need enemas to keep things moving and of course there are big problems with overuse of them as well as the osmotic laxatives like MOM and Mirilax.
Frankly, it should not be this hard to achieve regularity again.
So bring on your ideas and opinions.

No progress has been made. I now am taking lactulose. Enemas continue. Literally at wits end and my colorectal surgeon now admitting she has never seen a case like mine.
Ongoing bloating in the descending colon. Am almost at the point of asking for an ileostomy. So-maybe fresh new eyes may have some insight.
Thank you.

Man man. That’s how I’m feeling I just had surgery and it don’t seem to have corrected my issue. I now have more issue acid reflux that’s tearing me up
So sorry for your situation…I’m sure you have tried this, but eating raw veggies, baby carrots, cucumbers with skin on, etc, no fruit, seems to help with my continuing constipation. Fiber, fiber cereals just bloat me. And lay, sit with a warm microwave pad on your tummy. It’s comforting if nothing else…good luck!
That’s what I have been doing. I’m just loosing so much weight it’s scary. I’m listed as malnourished now.
Yikes! Can you have small bits of cheese, or meal supplement drinks with the vegetables? Rice or
corn grits or oatmeal are good carbs. Plain instant corn grits with a little cheese and a cooked egg on top is a delicious meal to have with your raw veggies…and easy to make and to digest. I have acid reflux, gerd, etc and had to learn to just sort of snack…has helped immensely and I’m off the big tummy drugs. STOP eating as soon as you can feel any satisfaction. Hard to do if you are hungry or need to gain weight. Then start again in an hour or two. Have you seen a dietician?
I reached a point where my tummy was enormous and I couldn’t eat because it wouldn’t go down. Lost weight and couldn’t focus in my familiar grocery store-would wander around not knowing where anything was. Getting to the point where I didn’t feel safe driving.
My savior until I got a diagnosis by a GOOD doctor, was something called “porcine enzymes “, (pig) suggested by the local awesome health store. I was desperate. After about 4-5 days, I was able to start swallowing food again.
I’m not sure if any of this could help you, but I’m seriously better these days.
🙏
Did you try potatoes? Cooked cold potatoes have more fiber and is low fodmap. Mashed potatoes with lactose free milk and olive oil is good. Olive oil is a natural laxative for f taken on empty stomach in the morning with a glass and f warm water and couple drops of lemon juice. You dan take 2 tbsp. What’s the reason for your weight loss? Do you eat enough?
