Cipro Question: Worried about the side effects

Posted by desidawn @desidawn, Sep 26, 2023

I have anxiety over my health, so I am very bothered about taking Cipro after finding out about all its severe side effects. I was diagnosed with a UTI and prescribed Cipro 250 mg. Take 2 times daily for 5 days. I only took one 250 mg pill yesterday around 5pm before finding out about all the severe side effects it can cause. I have read that people have had nerve issues, joint issues, mental issues, and even worse after taking this antibiotic. I guess with all that being said, my question is should I be concerned after having only taken one 250mg pill? This may seem silly to ask, but it is worrying me.

Cipro tends to be the drug of choice and works well for a UTI. I think I only take a 4 day course of it when prescribed if I remember correctly. Have you tried Azo Cranberry tablets and Now D-Mannose tablets for UTI's? Both are sold on Amazon and I have several friends whom these helps. Also, if you can tolerate diluted cranberry juice if drinking it concentrated is too strong can help prevent UTI's. I am sensitive to everything. I have had no problems with a low dose of Cipro for UTI's and it works quickly. HOWEVER, everyone is different with side effects. UTI's can be serious if not treated quickly. Please talk to your doctor before trying any of the above mentioned supplements. I'm sorry you are battling this. Hugs & Prayers....

@desidawn, Please talk with your doctor about your concern. Each one of us reacts differently and your doctor will be the best/only one to guide you.
As for taking only 1 dose of your antibiotic - this will not cure your UTI. You need to take the entire prescribed amount to eliminate the infection.
I am not like you, but I have taken Cipro for uti's with no problem. I have called my doctor or my transplant nurse just to be sure it (or any antibiotic) is okay for me when given by an unfamiliar NP in the urgent treatment center.
I hope you find comfort and relief.

..... Internet has pros and cons, as we well know, may I suggest checking Quinolone meds such as cipro; I took one (Canada) Norflox 2016 and believe got P.N. from it 2 weeks after taking last pill. (2 a day for 7 days) After I read it is for extreme cases... when side effects outweigh result of infection. I am like many, super sensitive to meds... all we can do is research the meds, ask the pharmacist, try and take mildest meds we can and hope for the best. I wish I had never taken it but who knows, may have taken another one with side effects... we have to be realistic and be aware of side effects - but when others have taken the same drug with no side effects, wonder "why me.?"

p.s. There was a class action lawsuit in USA and I think main result is that manufacturer has to have black box warning? The type I got had a black box around the information on the pages from Pharmacy but no one at that time 2016 told me what it meant! It was for a simple uti whereas is for serious cases (Norflox here... and many people got side effects weeks to months after taking... I would take something with possible bad side effects if matter of life or death but IF there is an alternative, why take it? Anyway, for me, it is like a game of roulette when I take meds while my spouse is on 17 a day and no "known" side effects. Ugh !!!!! Bet of luck to you !

Yes, the package insert for Cipro is quite an exciting read. I was prescribed Cipro for (I think) a UTI (or maybe it was a kidney infection), but after a few days the urine culture results came back, and my doctor changed me to a different antibiotic that was more effective for the specific bacteria causing the infection. If you ask your doctor about it, which is a reasonable thing to do, he or she can explain the reasoning (pros and cons) for prescribing Cipro.

I know an antibiotic for UTIs, fosfomycin. Bactrim also, if you can use sulfa.

You are not being silly, Dawn. I have been prescribed Cipro periodically, over past 20+ years, with no problem. But, about 2 years ago, my dr prescribed it and, after one dose, I woke in the middle of the night with terrible leg/knee pain. I reported it immediately and my dr. discontinued it. After reading about it, I learned that muscle weakness, pain, swelling in joints, tendon rupture are some possible side effects. And, some of these can occur within a couple days of taking the drug. I think, in my case, my allergic response may be because I am older now and more sensitive. Needless to say, Cipro is now on my "do not prescribe" list. As you undoubtedly know, never, ever wait to report concerning symptoms to your doctor. Best of luck to you.

I found this article online after my 90 year old father had a stroke following a round of Cipro :
