Evenity bone density treatment 5 years after a spinal fusion

Posted by chardouglas @chardouglas, Sep 22, 2023

I had a spinal fusion L2-L5 Dec 2018. I took Prolia for 2 years then stopped. My bone density was almost normal before surgery but is now osteoporosis. The doctor wants me to take Evenity for 1 year. It builds bone hopefully from osteoporosis to osteopenia. But I am really nervous about the hardware in my spine. I can't find a doctor who has prescribed Evenity to a patient with an existing fusion- only immediately after surgery to promote the bone adhering to the hardware. Has anyone take Evenity 4-5 years after a spinal fusion? Thank you.

Two years ago my wife had a C-2 - C4 fusion at Northwestern for cervical mylopathy. Four months ago she started monthly infusions of Evenity. So far so good.

Thank you so much! My fusion was done at Northwestern too. I feel much better about trying Evenity. Hope your wife continues to do well.

Which drug out there has the least side affects for osteoporosis? Scared to death to take anything. No fractures yet but lots of back pain.

I've taken bone density drugs for 25 years so was hoping for an alternative. I've taken Fosamax, Forteo, Boniva and Prolia. I didn't have many side effects. But going off Prolia for 2 years has caused my density to go from almost normal to osteoporosis. I was just told I should never have stopped Prolia because this is what happens. I hope you find something that works for you.

I feel the same way after years on aromatase inhibitors with their accompanying pain. I don’t want to take a drug that makes me feel older and more painful than I do now. Yet, I need to strengthen my bones. Top surgical dental implant specialist told me the drug that is preferred to prevent jaw necrosis is Prolia. He also said Forteo is better than Evenity.
