Bulge in middle after colon resection
I had sigmoid colon resection, 13” removed due to diverticulitis. Immediately after surgery I had a large buldge, that has not gone down after 2 1/2 months. Had a ct scan to detect a possible hernia, nothing. Very bloated, uncomfortable right after eating, even small meals, have this large band around my middle. Pull slot when I lift. What could it be

I had colon resection 8 months ago, same reason.... several weeks ago a six inch area around my abdominal incision area became hard, pronounced and uncomfortable. I thought it was due to constipation from a medication I was taking. I, too, had CT scans and no hernia was indicated. I'm trying to lose 5 lbs (5'8" 145 lbs) to see if it will go away. I'm following your thread to see if someone can shed light on this. Sorry I couldn't help.
Is it a seroma? A pocket of fluid can form under the incision months after… though usually it’s done. I had that and they had to reopen the incision and drain it.
Thank you... don't know if it's a seroma, but now I have a question for the doctor. Appreciate the feedback.
If painful and hard possible infection?
Hey Lucy! Checking to see how you’re doing with your bulge? Did you get it figured out?
I had my PCP look at it and she said it was probably a hernia because it's located directly on the incision site. There's nothing to indicate an infection. She said to not do anything at this point. I had a drainage bag for two weeks after surgery so the seroma isn't likely.
I'm not happy with being uncomfortable and with the look of my abdomen, but more importantly, I have read that not doing anything can make the hernia larger and more challenging to repair. I'm not done with my decision of what to do yet. Need to talk to colorectal surgeon who did the resection next.
@mpliese123, any update? How are you doing?
Definitely follow up with them! Good decision. I know the difference between seroma and hernia from what I am told by my sergeon as that the hernia would be soft and squishy and seromas are hard. Seromas can come back… so they are still monitoring mine. I keep getting a painful bulge feeling now that is above that area that I am worried about. It comes and goes. I think an ultrasound would be helpful and might ask about that. Good luck!!!
Anyone familiar with transanal flush? I had 20 inches of sigmiod removed due to blockage forming from repeated divirticulitis. Now, I average 8-9+ bm's a day. Iwear a pad because I dont feel the neex to go, but if I dont use the toilet every about 2 hours, I drip fecal material and soil the pad a bit. I rarely have diarhea, just continuous soft stool about tbe size of multiple pencils each time. It has been 10 months. I am very active, but very frustrated.
I’m having a similar issue. I also had the surgery and have been distended and bloated ever since. It’s going on 2 years !!
I’ve had every test there is. All tests negative.
I suspect it’s from surgical lesions.
I try and control the bloat with a low FODMAP diet, but the distinction never goes away!
Let’s keep each other updated if either of us finds a solution!!
