Trapped gas - have tried everything!

Posted by Twocoastsm @marlenec, Sep 22, 2023

I have IBS-D and have real problems with pain from trapped gas along with bloating. I have tried IB Gard, Gas-x, ginger, recommended yoga poses and abdominal massage, Hyoscyamine (prescribed by GI) with very little relief. I have been maintaining a low FODMAP diet for months and had a two week course of Xifaxan d/t positive SIBO results two months ago. I had a CT scan at the ER two months ago because I thought I had diverticulitis (but didn’t) and the scan didn’t reveal anything of note. Is there anything else people have tried and that has helped with this issue?

The CT scan showed only constipation which is rarely my problem. Walking does help but sometimes the pain just doubles me over.

This may sound like an old remedy but it works have used it for years. 1 teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of warm water will relief your gas an help with bowel movements. Try a little lemon in the water if that helps because, honestly the taste isn't that great. It does work google this remedy an you will see its been around for years. Hope this helps best wishes.

Hi Paulr58,
You are so right about this remedy for gas and constipation! I'm 77 and have used this for years also! My mother used to give it to me when I needed it. I've never heard of putting it in warm water. I always used it in cold water. It works great but it does taste terrible! You need to add the lemon. It does get rid of constipation and is good at also getting rid of gas at the same time all over your body. I'm glad you brought it up to Twocoastsm!

This is gonna sound weird. At the gym, I use a rowing machine and it helps with constipation. The movement back and forth and my knees well above my waste pushes everything in my intestines and colon down. I would guess this would include gas.

I have a hypersensitive stomach if I eat certain foods. Have you tried either a diet free of raw fruits and vegetables and instead just eat them cooked? It can be considered a pre-digestion step.

Also, consider trying just one "real meal" a day with everything cooked? The other two meals and snacks eat bland food that is easy to digest, like oatmeal, bread, and the like. That way you are not taxing your digestive system.

I always follow my first suggestion and often follow my second. I have IBS-D and a hypersensitive gut.

And for a real crazy suggestion --and I do this -- I add Bragg apple cider vinegar to everything or take some in water. The Bragg pills are too strong for me and I need to repackage them into smaller capsules for a smaller dose. I hypothesize that the vinegar helps me as I have weak/inadequate stomach acid.

This is gonna sound weird. I am a 68 y/o male and have real problems with constipation. One thing that helps is going to the gym and using the rowing machine. It gets my knees up above my lower body, and the back and forth motion seems to create a peristaltic effect.

Maybe the same thing would work for gas. I realize this is a long shot, and that not everyone has access to a gym or a rower. Just thought I'd mention it.

I also notice that when I go to bed - I sleep on my side with a regular pillow between my knees, I'm most likely to get some relief from gas.

Hope this helps, at least a little. All the best to everyone.

I use Boiron homeopathic products and am amazed at how fast they work for me. You can find them at your local organic market or if you don't have access to those, you can look them up online. I use them only occasionally so I can't recall the actual name of the one that I use for abdominal pain relieved with passing gas. Reminds me I am all out of my histaminum one that helps when I have leaky gut and things are passing through the stomach lining and disrupting all systems in my body. Best wishes for your full and complete recovery.
