Upcoming PSA Test - Suspend or Continue Taking my Tamsulosin?

Posted by tgregg99 @tgregg99, Sep 22, 2023

I'm male, 71, with BPH, taking tamsulosin, and it's working. My last few annual PSA tests have been a big above normal (total PSA) with the free PSA very high, which my doctors all tell me indicates my BPH is most likely the cause of elevated PSA test results. I've also read that tamsulosin can impact the PSA test results.

My urologist who ordered my upcoming PSA test next week just advised me to continue taking my tamsulosin med as a better predictor of potential prostate cancer. However, my nephrologist said that while most studies favor continuing the med before the PSA test, but some studies suggest stopping to take it for the test.

Anyone out there with a similar situation? I appreciate your thoughts, thanks!

I can tell you my experience; whether it is an indicator for you is up to you and your docs.
Similar age a few years ago, early 70's. Had BPH and took both tamsulosin and dutasteride for it.
My PSA ran about 1 or a little more. Then it started to rise until it got to 5 over about 4 months time. There was no consideration of stopping dutasteride and I'm glad for that.
We moved right to a biopsy that showed an aggressive form of PC on one side. Had prostatectomy 2-months later and it had already crossed the margin and I have a cancer spot on a rib though very small.
For me this PC started fast and got away in spite of fairly quick action. Androgen therapy has arrested it so I'm ok for now and foreseeable future.
It's your call along with your docs. Getting the facts is always important.

Thank you for your info. Just curious, did your PSA test also measure "free PSA," and if so, what was that result?

Free PSA, no.
Just total.
(BTW, Androgen med is Lupron every 3 months)
