Bone strengthening drug for prostate cancer metastasis

@digger First I want to say how devastating it must be to find out that the prostate cancer is metastatic. I’m assuming that your doctor prescribed Prolia because the metastases has weakened your bones enough that there is danger of fractures.

My brother was diagnosed with prostate cancer and we talk about his medications and his health frequently. Because of other meds he was taking (Prednisone which is a steroid) his doctor recommended Prolia. I’m sharing what my brother told me. My brother goes to his doctor’s office every 3 months for an injection of Prolia. His insurance (Medicare Advantage Plan with Aetna) covers the injection and medication and he has a co-pay. He has been doing this for about 18 months and does not have any side effects.

Thanks what stage is he how old I’m 69 if you google Prolia and read the side effects it scares the hell out of you I didn’t see to many positives and they said once you’re on it hard to get off it without more side effects the article I read was mostly women so I’m still researching I have till Monday I go for radiation of my spine today I go to Cleveland Clinic

My brother was 65 years old at first diagnosis. Stage IIIA. His prostate was resected by surgery and then when his PSA starting climbing up he was treated with radiation therapy and his PSA is now below 0.

I’d suggest that you talk with your doctor about your worries about side effects. It’s a cost/benefit ratio where you and your doctor can figure out if the “cost” which could be side effects that hopefully are minimal in comparison to the benefits you could gain from taking the medication. I wonder if it is difficult to discontinue. Another good question for your doctor.

I was getting Zometa for about 3 years but had to stop for a couple of years due to having all my teeth pulled and getting dentures. Luckily no BRONJ so far. When I restarted bone drug therapy this summer, they switched me to XGEVA. My Oncologist said it was a bit better than Zometa. So far, no issues.

@digger I’m circling back to check in with you. Have you decided whether or not you’ll start the bone strengthening medication? How are you feeling today?

Still thinking I went to my dentist to have my teeth checked. If I go on it they want to put a crown on one of my teeth and then I’ll be OK if I do go on and I shouldn’t have to worry about the bad stuff so much if I don’t go on it I got the tooth fixed anyway, they say the risk is it worth the rewards I just don’t know. Thanks for asking.

It's good that you discussed this with your dentist. I learned from my dentist that they have many patients who are on meds for osteoporosis and so they are very careful about this.
