Initial blood tests to ask for ?
Hello...
I just had a dexa indicating osteoporosis, and will discuss soon with my PCP. I had a CBC done earlier this summer. I have seen CTX as an important test. I am wondering if I should ask for that on my discussion visit, or anything else, for that matter. Endo initial visit is not for a few months.

CTX and P1NP. Vitamin D and calcium. Albumin.
Thx. I'll look up my CBC's to see if calcium and albumin are there - I'm thinking that they are along with "D" but if dr says OK I can repeat those and I had to look up P1NP (page 153 in Great Bones book).
I don't think I will be getting the entire data from my dexa until after my dr appointment - I requested it but so far, I only have the report.
Also I had someone tell me her parathyroid was involved. I will have to look up to see if a blood test for that is done.
I know endo's treat a variety of conditions including osteoporosis. Do people see a gyn for management I wonder?
@alexxa yes to PTH. I may have left others out too! Parathyroid is very important to check since high PTH can cause bone loss.
Yes. I'm seeing the gyn prior to the pcp so I'll see if the gyn wants to get started and order any of these things.
Thanks.
You can test your parathyroid levels with a blood test. I had mine tested and they were too high which led to a parathyroid surgery. This was all in hopes of helping my body absorb calcium. Still working on all of it.
Thx Marie. What was recovery like from that parathyroid surgery?
It was actually very easy. Outpatient and very little pain if any. If your parathyroid levels aren't right, they have to be corrected before you can make any decision about treating your osteoporosis.
Thx.
Yes windyshores calcium and albumin weren't flagged as high on the CBC (or maybe that one is called 'complete metabolic panel' )... I think the calcium level must've just made it in the normal range I think it was 10.1
Thanks for your suggestions. A.
