Total hip replacement - What to expect for recovery
I am having a total right hip replacement in six weeks. My surgeon leaves me to believe that I will be up and around in a few days, just no kitchen work. The physical therapist who came to evaluate me before hand felt I needed exrended care after surgery. What has been others experience following this kind of surgery? How has recovery gone for you?

Thanks for commiserating. No one I know has had post op hip pain for as long as I have. I’ve just decided my tissues, tendons, and nerves are really angry at me and taking a really long time to heal. I insisted on the MRI with my first doctor, but I had to order the records from the hospital’s medical records department to get the results. As previously mentioned the orthopedist told me the MRI looked fine (I think he just discounted the tendonopathy, as the new joint did look fine.
Curious about what the MRI revealed. I think every time I had an MRI on my knee, the results were always "inconclusive". Not sure if that's good or bad. Hope you got an encouraging report and can get back to pt and the pool.
I haven't received the results yet. I'll post them as soon as they come in. I'm not expecting much.
I had a total hip replacement two weeks ago. I am 76 and taking prednisone so my experience may not be typical. Two of my docs ordered me to a nursing home for a two week rehab. Insurance decided I didn’t need it so after 10 days in the hospital I went home. I was very weak and shaky with a lot of pain. I cannot still after nearly a week at home can’t get in and out of my high bed. I finally took my first home shower after being home 5 days. Home health care is covered by insurance so I am getting PT and nurse evaluations at home. I am very relieved to have that. The surgery recovery is much harder than I expected. Best wishes I hope things go well for you.
Hi everyone!
Update—have been able to walk short distances without my cane. Today I stowed some bags of clothes in self storage without help (have an ice pack on now). No pain at all from either the new hip or the incision. Some numbness but nothing unexpected.
Thanks for this forum!

I received my MRI results. They show a bulging disc and other language I can't understand. I have an appointment with the back surgeon who ordered the MRI. I'm thinking of going to a chiropractor if I don't get relief from the surgeon. My hip is still very painful. I just want it to all be resolved. Tired of the pain.
Osteo Therapist and the Bowen Therapist are my absolute saviour's. I had never heard of either and decided honestly why not give it a go. I can't tell you how much they have changed my life. take care
Hi again!
First day without my cane. So far so good. I’m making sure my gait is normal.
Starting PT this week. Will get guidance on when I cam return to the gym. (I looked back, and it’s been 6 mos, largely due to the pain in my hip. That’s gone now with my implant.)
My doctor may order an X-ray to make sure the implant has seated properly, but I believe I’ll be ready to rock my month end.
Onward!
Bill
My surgeon did a six month review with X-Rays to make sure that everything is okay. One interesting fact: my surgeon did not want me to do a lot of walking for the first five weeks but said that bike riding was fine. I guess the bike riding doesn't put the same stress on the implant and the bones growing around it.
depending upon the position of box springs, pull out creating a pseudo-step about 2". Your 'good foot' heel uses this as a prop up with palms of hands 'jump a movement toward pillow' a few times, onto mattress. Initially, a Reach-arm-circle assists the operated leg to swing onto bed. Palms again to adjust position. "Eventually", assist rod is Unnecessary & jump-up onto bed & slide to pillow becomes an Easy Routine.
