Do OTC joint supplements work to reduce pain from inflamation?

Posted by misscjv @misscjv, Sep 9, 2023

I over stressed both hip joints going up and down a ladder about 25 times, to replace my dead ice-maker. The next day I had severe pain in both hips joints. I've now had a cortisone shot in each hip joint with little relief. The only thing that really helped is a wheel chair, which was really inconvenient as I live alone and have a small house, large yard and two dogs to care for. I almost always refuse to get physical therapy as I don't believe that making my joints hurt worse is going to help. I am considering using an otc joint supplement but can't afford to spend a bunch of $ on something that may or may not help. Any suggestions as to what may (or may not!) help would be greatly appreciated. My effort to save a hundred dollar service charge to have someone install the ice-maker for me has resulted in hundreds of dollars of medical bills. Thank you for any advice you can gife me!

It would be best t find out what is causing the pain and if inflamed what is causing that and then you will know how to deal with it in ways that are not just alleviating pain.

Curious if anyone has tried and has had success with
- Glucosamine Chondroitin
- MSM (MethylSulfonylMethane) ?

Have a lot of pain and stiffness - want others' opinions. Both are supposedly good for connective tissues.

I had TKR in April and will be having scar tissue scraped out of knee joint with arthroscopy soon. I had been using krill oil and Turmeric as both are natural anti inflammatories. I was also using oil of frankincense topically on my knee for stiffness. The NOW brand that is mixed with jojoba oil worked great- instant relief! After doing more reading on the frankincense, ginger, cinnamon, clove, peppermint, lavender and a few other oils, they are all anti inflammatories. Unfortunately, preparing for this surgery upcoming, I can’t use any of the above. Anti inflammatories are natural blood thinners and I am missing them greatly right now. Hope your stiffness isn’t due to internal scar tissue like mine. Most of the time, I feel like I’m walking with a wooden leg and the most I can bend is 90. And that is uncomfortable after a few minutes. Hope some of my remedies help you!

if you are concerned about the 'scraping' ... I had scar tissue removed from a 2 year old, 5 inch long scar by a regenerative medicine doctor using PRP. Did the job really well with no after issues. It was expensive as it is not covered but I thought worth it as I didn't have to worry about my poor tissue healing from scraping.

Maybe I knew your brother. I graduated in 1960.......can't believe it!!
I have been very active but now my arthritis is beginning to show so I just take Aleve, or Tramadol when it is really bad. Only Caltrate for bone health.

Brother graduated in 65 from Andrean. Cousin graduated in 62. Dad had an auto parts store on 13 th and Grant. We lived on 56 th and Connecticut. Older brother went to Lee Wallace, passed away k think he would be about 80.
Other brother had a drug store in Miller. He passed also. Saw a new video sent to me last night on Gary, certain areas are trying to come back. Did not know US Steel is still the largest steel producer in the US. Great place to be from!!!

I know my Dad knew your Dad because he used your Dad's store.
My father and grandfather worked for U.S. Steel. I did not know it was still
so important. We lived in Glen Park until the 1980's.

@chiefswife Hi, and best of luck on your surgery. Wanted to ask about frankincense. You use for stiffness on your knee. My back gets stiff ( muscles tense ). Do you think using frankincense topically on my back area would be helpful. My muscles spasm so tight that it pulls a rib out of alignment. Any other suggestions will be appreciated. TIA

stumbled upon the above entries. Gary, Lew Wallace & Andrean surprised my mind to find. Five wks ago, Hip surgery, progressing @ snail pace but new Ortho exercises bouncing me back @ a zip-pace. Weaning from Tram. Sleep is seldom but Energy + -- is my standard modus operandi. Graduated from Andrean, lived in Hobart til '82. Was a 'jogger' @ age 20 when most folks thought I was crazy. Continued for 40 yrs in 4 other states of residency. kayraymat response: thanks for script & OTC pain suggestions...duly noted.

Another region rat!!! Amazing. Surprised, tramadol? Ouch. That’s just a step above Tylenol.
You had to be in pain.

Btw planning on coming back up to stay, getting out of lousy health care state. Crazy people too!
