Hi Cindy. I just had my left hip removed from infection. I went in for a hip replacement and it shattered. They did another hip and that’s when the infection came in. That’s when my MD said the hip has to come out and I might be on antibiotics forever. Right now I go to Physical Therapy 3x a week. I have a brace made for me and should be getting a lift on my shoe so I will be balanced. I also have a drop foot from the beginning after the first surgery. Now I can walk with a walker 48 feet but my left leg feels like a 100 lbs. I get groin pain when I move. I can’t stand by myself but hoping it gets better. I’m frustrated because I want to walk like yesterday and it’s not going to happen. My doctor tells me it may take up to a year but feels confident that I will get better. I would like to know if you are taking any excersises. I hope you feel better🙏 Carol

Hi Carol...I'm so sorry you are going through this. I have met 4 other people with Girdlestone Resection also. I have chronic osteomyelitis (infection in the bone) of femur and pelvis, will never be able to have another hip and also on lifelong antibiotics. I use walker in the house to get around, but crutches when I go out. I ride upright exercise bike daily and do lots of exercises to strengthen my core and quadriceps. I have connected with the others and we chat via messenger on Facebook. If you'd like to do that, or exchange emails to chat more, I'm fine with that too. I'm in Michigan, USA. My husband has been gluing soles of one shoe onto another shoe to compensate for my 3 inch leg difference. It works great and he's become a pretty good shoe cobbler...haha. I'm 70 and was in pretty good shape before this happened to me and was an avid walker. I can get around a little bit with just a cane in the house, but wouldn't trust myself not to fall if I went outside on uneven ground. I can take 5-10 steps at a time with nothing, but it doesn't look very pretty. After 18 months, I still see improvement in small things I can do, so don't give up. It's a long process. I'm here to chat if you want to....Cindy

Hi, I'm 3 mo post Girdlestone and just recently was given permission to put limited weight on my leg. May I ask what your hip brace is like? and also where did you get the lift made for your shoe? I asked my surgeon to refer me to an orthotics clinic. Would that be the right sort of place? (Btw he said it's too early to get a shoe lift because things will still be "settling " for a while. Thanks, Janeen
