Long term side effects of Evenity

Posted by polite @polite, Aug 31, 2023

My Bone Specialist Prescribed and My Insurance Co. approved Evenity. Would like more information on long term side effects and results; to help me decide on Evenity vs. Tymlos or Forteo. Many thanks in advance .

madeleine40 @madeleine40 I was on Tymlos for 2 years and have been off of it for 6 months. I had a -4.6 to start with and it was reduced to -3.2 after the two years. I was told I would have to take something else, Evenity, Prolia, etc. forever after that but I was unable to take anything else for various reasons. I was never without pain in my upper spine where the fracture was and still have pain. I now take multi vitamins, calcium, vit. D, zinc and magnesium and have had no more fractures. I had no side effects except a slight nausea, so I took it before bedtime. Good luck,

Thank you for your feedback txmom. Looks like good result in 2 years to me. Was the spine fracture what made you decide to start treatment? I imagine this would cause quite a bit of pain.
Wishing you a prompt recovery.

Hello,
My endocrinologist put me on Evenity. With Evenity it is only for 1 year and then you follow up with a Bisphosphonate and that is usually the case with all Anabolic medications. Evenity has shown great promise and good increases with scores. My Spine T score is -4.6.
It has shown 11-14% during the first year.
It’s a hard decision to make which med to go on. Best of luck to you.

What I meant to say that it has shown 11-14% during the first year in case studies. I just started the Evenity.

Yes, a severe pain in the upper back that was a fracture. I think the pain would be better now if I wasn't the caregiver for my husband who has been on hospice for almost 2 years. He is certainly worth the pain and we are hoping for many more years together after 65 years. Wishing you the best of luck also.

Has anyone who is reading this had side effects from the Evenity? My endocrinologist is recommending I get a Evenity for one year and then go to prolia after that. I was just diagnosed with osteoporosis and I’m very afraid to start the medicine after reading about the side effects. My T score was 2.6 and even though I’m on the osteoporosis level I feel that maybe I’m still borderline enough to be able to manage it with diet changes extensive walking and vitamins. There is a supplement called BoneUp that I have been taking since I received the diagnosis. I don’t know what it’s doing to my bones, but my fingernails are suddenly very hard instead of flimsy like they were before I started. What’s going on out there with side effects?

@whyme123 My endocrinologist just prescribed Evenity for 12 months that will be followed by Zolendronate. I am in the osteopenia range (-1.5) after taking Fosomax for 5 years however since I stopped the Fosomax I had radiation therapy to the pelvic region for endometrial cancer. I experienced a fracture of the sacrum (lower spine) that was related to the radiation therapy.

I had no side effects from Fosomax. My mother had osteoporosis and was frail with many compression fractures and pain by the time she was my age (I’m now 71 years old). I do everything I can to maximize bone density and health so I I do not have the quality of life experience that my mother had. I did not hesitate on agreeing to start on Evenity. If there are side effects I’ll talk with my endocrinologist. I am doing everything I can with diet and exercise to optimize bone health and if Evenity prevents future fractures then that’s a huge bonus.

I think whether or not to take Evenity or any such medication is an individual decision a person must make given their risk factors and a conversation with their doctor. In retrospect, I wish I had seen an endocrinologist years ago when I was first diagnosed with osteoporosis. You are doing the right thing by consulting with a specialist (endocrinology) in bone health.

What do you think you will do? Will you talk with your doctor again?

I took the 12 shots of Evenity, which ended in July of this year. I could not get surgery due to the Osteoporosis. Finally, my surgeon felt that my bones were as strong as they are going to get right now and will be doing my infusion surgery within the next two months. I still can't stand over four or five minutes since my injury. I had no heart problems when I had started Evenity. The only thing that I had noticed was waking up around 3:00 a.m. and it was hard to get back to sleep. I was tired the day that I got my shots. I hope this helps.
