I have seen 3 neurologist all have suggested I have physical therapy for balance, but this has not relieved my numbness in my feet and toes and burning when I’m asleep. I have tried to to get an appt. With one of Mayo Clinic’s neurologist but have been turned down, at this point I am at a loss of what to do next. Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated. Thank u.

Exercise had made a huge difference for me. No, I can't move the way I used to, the way I want to BUT...with exercise, my nightly cramps have all but disappeared. Acceptance is a big part of this whole disease process. Wishing you the best.

I’m 89 I still play hard baseball I work out at lease 3 times a week and play golf 3 to 4 times a week and yes I do have a very busy schedule I want it that way. My biggest concern is balance.

My husband has neuropathy in both feet and he says he has to be aware of wherever he is stepping. We bought a rollator/walker for when we are having to walk on uneven ground, or if it is a long walk, so he can sit and rest. Strength training helps prevent falls--you may not be equally adept with both legs.

I’m sorry to hear that fortunately I don’t have that problem my main issue is balance.

The standard answer from most doctors who do not have a clue what is wrong with you is Physical Therapy!

Your right, pain during the PT.
And after the PT the neuropathy is still there.

I had my first session of Myofascial release after many surgeries and a lot of PT over a 45 year period and successful chemotherapy treatments for lymphoma. And could feel different parts of my body responding. I learned about the Barnes method on this website and did my research…I was a competitive athlete 10 years ago. The huge amount of scar tissue in my lumbar area after my 3rd “minimally evasive surgery” is keeping my spine from moving without pain. I also have been diagnosed with multiple neuropathies, fibromyalgia, degenerative joint disease and RLS. Hopefully I can walk further without pain and not need opioids soon

I’ve only hav 3 sessions. It’s strange and I don’t know why but some days my balance seems to be ok and other days like today it’s horrible. Im sorry I don’t have better news for u, all I can say it’s very frustrating because l’m a very active person.

Why would anyone believe that Physical Therapy would relieve neuropathy symptom symptoms or reverse them? PT is a fantastic modality that I use often when necessary. The neurologist referred to PT only for balance training not PN symptoms. Movement is the best thing to relieve sore muscles and if you sit all day and only move a few times a day for necessities you’re going to be stiff and in pain. I have spinal OA, PN, chronic pain and the more I remain stationary the more I hurt. I walk 2 miles daily and go to gym 2x week to keep in shape and stay active so I don’t hurt. It is never too late to get up and move.

Do you feel like the PT helped you with balance-if it did, I will go immediately!! My primary doctor said she didn't think it would help because it is nerve related-your thoughts???

I have had diabetic neuropathy for at least two decades and a good PT is worth their weight in gold. I have severe numbness in both feet. And serious balance issues. The best solution is to strengthen the core of your body. And a good PT is an expert at that.
I too was an active person playing organized basketball for 25 years and racquetball for decades after. November 11th I will join the octogenarians. I use a cane if I want to walk any distance, like in the mall. In the airport and getting on and off cruise ships we take the wheel chairs. There are many voices on MCC, thank God. “Take what you need and leave the rest”! I am praying that you will have the peace, joy, and comfort you DESERVE, GOD BLESS YOU🙏🏾

Anthony, my guess is your body and age have merged and you’re beginning to develop symptoms of aging. All of our bodies breakdown over time with some faster than others. You seem to have found a way to continue to function like a much younger person (hard baseball) but your body is now talking to you. Best to listen to your body. It may be hard to face for someone who has had a very active retirement life. PT is a fantastic modality and worth every penny. They are my go to when my aches and pains become too much.
