Yes, I had to learn how to do the diaphragmatic breathing. When practicing, the stomach rather than the chest moves with each breath. At the pulmonary rahab I was told my damaged lungs will not repair themselves but I need to learn how to breathe differently and to make my lungs work more efficiently. The different breathing was supposed to exercise my lungs to expand and work harder and more effective to eventually work in higher gear. So far so good, it takes lots of practice and purposeful breathing but my lung capacity increased from a very low 42% to 74% in 18 months. I am almost at the normal range which is anything above 80%.
