Forteo: sore throat as side effect?
I am 2 doses in to starting Forteo, having some bad DXA results (-3.5, & similar) despite supplementing with D3, Calcium, Magnesium, K2, as well as a lifetime of healthy eating and weight bearing exercise.
I have a sudden sore throat. This is listed as a side effect-- does anyone here have any first-hand experience? Does it last as long as you take it? Does it go away as you adapt to the drug? I'm not looking forward to living with a nagging sore throat!

Hello @nancyoinnc. I am sorry to hear of your sore throat side effect and certainly can empathize with not wanting to have the linger!
I thought it would be helpful to bring in some other members who have experience with Forteo to see if they had anything similar happen when they started taking it. Members such as @windyshores @toni7 and @lbmorgan44 may be able to share more with you.
Are you having any other subsequent symptoms?
So far, only the sore throat, that is exactly contemporaneous with starting Forteo. I am getting a PCR covid test tomorrow in case it's coincidental covid sore throat, and a strep test too. It's as sore as strep, making swallowing painful. I'd really appreciate learning of others' experiences! Especially, how long did the sore throat last? Is it forever? (Ugh).
I've been on Forteo for a couple weeks short of a year. I had some side effects (mostly mild) of random pain the first 2 weeks of treatment but nothing since. No sore throat. I'd wait a bit to see if it continues.
I was on Forteo for two years (with good results) and never had a side-effect. Which doesn’t mean you could. I’m sure you will get things checked out and hopefully feel better!
I’m on my 2nd Forteo pen, and have had a sore throat for about a week, but it’s not severe like strep throat, and swallowing isn’t painful.
Hi All of my new found brothers and sisters that are suffering from multiple autoimmune diseases, I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis, Fybromyalgia & Sjogrens. I also have bone loss at 36. ? %. I tried Forteo for approx. 1month. The side effect was deep bone pain. Intolerable pain! No other side effects. I then had to have oral surgery & my Doctor & dentists explained that I would need to stop using Forteo for 1year prior to any dental procedure. I’m very sorry for your sore throat pain. I have experienced Strep throat symptoms and that pain is just awful.
Here’s to our health & well being!!
God, our Heavenly Father is also our healer!!! God bless all y’all

I have been on Forteo for a couple of weeks and was suddenly hit hard with a whole host of side effects including scratchy throat, not severe but irritating. I also had bone pain, joint pain, constipation, flu symptoms (chills&fever) body aches, exhaustion and generally have felt terrible.
I stopped the injections for 3 days and the symptoms have subsided. I will start injections again today and am very uncomfortable about having them all come roaring back again. They made day to day activities impossible. All I could do was stay warm under the covers shivering and sleep.
Has anyone experimented with taking Forteo EVERY OTHER day instead of daily? None of my doctors really seem to know much about Forteo since it is relatively new and no studies I have researched offer insight into this level of use except one rat study which showed minimum loss of effectiveness.
If anyone has a remedy for the side effects please reply.
I have been using Forteo for way longer than I had expected, about 3 1/2 years. After the recommended “no more than 24 months in your lifetime,” my endocrinologist wanted to me to continue using it. My bone density had improved some, but not as much as he or I had hoped. He said quite a few doctors have been having their patients use it longer, and he feels like it’s fairly safe to do that. Also, I can’t take any of the oral osteoporosis medications because I have a rare, serious, incurable esophageal disorder.
I haven’t felt any side effects except occasionally bruising & pain at injection sites, but my calcium level in my blood has been elevated
(10.8 when normal range goes up to 10.0). My doctor isn’t concerned about it. My alkaline phosphatase is also elevated, but additional blood tests have confirmed that it’s “bone specific,” not the kind that would happen with poor liver function, so the doctor is not concerned about it either.
